Abscess Wound, Healing Advice

Recommended Posts

Dog went lame on me around 2 weeks ago, took him to vet out of hours. Seen a lump around his neck area with a bit of fluid, gave him some Loxicom which reduced the swelling within hours. Dog was eating and drinking for 2 days so thought he's just had a bang. Next day went lame on me as though he was pissed. Felt him he was cold one minute then roasting the next, so was upto the vets on a Saturday night.

When I put him on the vets table I noticed the fluid had gone onto his chest with a red mark about 6 inches long.He had a temprature and was kept in. Next morning phoned up and they said it was an abscess and he will be kept in again. The 6 inch red mark had turned black and skin was dying, they told me it still has quite a bit of travelling to do.first of all I was told he definately needed surgery. Been back today and vet said the wound has shrunk and keep doing whatever I have been doing with him.

I have been flushing with warm salt water from a 30ml syringe, they said the skin in picture is good skin and hoping that he don't need reconstructive surgery.

One of the lads on here told me about Manuka honey, which I looked into and was impressed with the results I seen. Mentioned it to 2 of the vets and said yes it's good, but advised me to just leave things as they are. I ordered Medical Manuka honey and gauze and from what I have seen it helps speed up the proccess. Has anyone on here used it, if so what type of wounds has it been used on and did it help with the healing proccess. Any other advice to aid recovery will be appreciated.

Alright bud, that skin looks good, it's called re-granulation and its supposed to be that colour. Just continue with the saline flushes and he should be sound. Is he still on antibiotic cover?

Thanks for the info mate. I can remember the vet saying re-grandulation. He's got 1 antibiotic left and vet said to stop after that where as manuka would carry on protecting from infection. I am carrying on with the flushes mate but was reading up on the manuka last night again and the results are spot on, keeps the wound hydrated when covered, kills all skin bactaria's and speeds up reduction of the wound. The vet didn't say don't use it, she just said don't use it for now.My ex is a vet nurse and said its great to use, so I asked her why they don't use it, she said there is a vet that does, it's just expensive.

That wound does not need honey, it's healthy. Your wound bed should have very little moisture, honey is good for sloughy wounds. You don't want to be adding more moisture to it at this stage of healing.

No worries mate it's doing the job so far and what your advising me is the same as the vet.

I am now 90% sure this injury is from the claws of a feral cat from about 10-12 weeks ago. Checked over him at the time and seen no bleeding what so ever. I knew the cat had hurt him by the noise of the dog. So if anyone in a similar situation give your dogs a good look over and take precaution. Spoke to a fella the other day and his dog lost half of it's face from similar incident.

Glad your dog is coming good mate,

I almost lost a diog to a feral cat bite a few years ago, I try my best to avoid em but accidents can still happen.

Best of luck with his recovery,

Matt

Cheers matty. The fookers pop up when least expected. I have been walking him along a concrete waterfront, where I can walk him off the lead, there are apartments to the left and railing to my right about a 15-20 yard walk way between them and I have come across 3 there the last week. He's good in himself and will keep you updated mate.
