Glyn..... 5,208
Even when started on bigger game they will still work rabbit if nothing else is about. I totally disagree. I bring all my terriers, pups included ,for exercise a few times a week onto land that has plenty of rabbits. The reason I use this land is because I'm 100% certain there's no earths on it. My terriers regularly see the rabbits, maybe even chase them, and if the terriers don't hunt them in covert then my Springers are anyway and if one breaks covert then the lurcher will chase it. When out for a dig and one of my terriers goes to ground I can say with 100% confidence that it's not a rabbit it's after. In fact I'd put money on it. Also, if away from busy roads the terrier I want to work will be loose ,with a collar on, maybe all day unless we get a dig. And that wont be to rabbit. Anyone who's hunted with me will vouch for this. A lot of terrier work is reading your terrier like a book. Most lads don't know what they are looking for and those lads who are forever swapping dogs have no chance at all in knowing their terriers inside and out. BUT, as well as all this IMO a big factor in terriers that like bunnies and those who ignore them is the breeding. One of the best terriers I've ever dug too (dozens of times) would rabbit and so did some of his sons and daughters. do you remember the day with Chaz dropped him in and he caught a rabbit two foot in I thought this is not a good start to the day....Thankfully he made up for it 1 Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
As a pack out on exercise they will hunt anything but get them a collar on they are a changed animal .They know the crack .Have never dug a rabbit but I have dug to a rabbit whilst mooching in a shallow stop end which was broken up there and then .The best dog I owned was a bitch called Willow and was the result of mating one of mine to a Stevens bitch years ago .She was probably the result of me having loads of time for her and giving her the work 1 Quote Link to post
Treehands. 1,379
My older russel will work rabbits in cover but won't drop on them, Though I've dug 5 1/2 foot to him baying a rat behind a boulder. Once they get in the habit of working bunnys to ground, it's difficult to stop. I've always bashed a pup on rabbits early an teach them their limits. And once their bashing well, ease off on the rabbits. All depends on how much time you put in to the dog really . Though some terriers are born just to be a twat no matter what ! 4 Quote Link to post
Rabbit Hunter 6,613
I've never dug a rabbit with one of my own dogs but I have dug them digging on in tight tubes and bollocked them for 'rabbiting'. I did once dig 2 rats in a stop end with one. A young dog only gave a slight mark on the lead so I let him run through and got a mark at 2 ft, dug down and he was digging up a tiny tube. Pulled him out and a rats head appeared, it jumped out and was away. Then another appeared and it only made it to the edge of the dig before my mate volleyed it into kingdom come! Lol 1 Quote Link to post

dillydog 8,469
I worship the ground this old fart walks on, never told a lie and a pleasure to keep and work. Eleven years old on this dig last year, she's still fit and well and as long as she's willing she'll be out this season too. 18 Quote Link to post

stop.end 4,082
how deep I agree to a certain extent which is you drop them you should dig them out nose to nose with there fox but surely every terrier that's supposed to be working should do this everytime if its classed as a worker? but you hear folk on here saying there terrier runs big dead places to reassure them or some have even dug good terriers to a rabbit 1 time...Top class terriers don't do these things..had a bitch named lucy 92 around this time we were doing a lot of terrier work at least 4 times a week she really opened my eyes to what and how top class terriers worked...only a small bitch but very strong we dug 6 singles in a day with her twice and a 5 in a day another time with her.. she never needed a lead anywhere fields or main busy roads she just dandered by your side...another bitch about 4 years later named sounder ( not mine) she was also dug 5 times in a day a few times... and I dig over a bitch at the minute and shes also shaping up to make quite a career for herself..just hope now she can pass that gene on for soon as she breaks down shes getting lined shes 4 and a half... also have dug over a dog called trigger quite a few times and he also impressesed me...these bitches & dogs set the standard for me. 3 Quote Link to post
