Dispatching Game.

was talking to 3 of my young lads lastnight.

asking them if they would own lurchers.ferrets.guns.etc

and hunt when they are older.

my oldest lad said yes.he is very keen and dispatches all rabbits we catch.

my 2 youngest called me cruel and they wouldnt hunt at all because they think its cruel.

and asked me if i like or dislike dispatching rabbits.

to which i replyed truthfully.

no i dont feel anything at all when i dispatch them.

not a single feeling in me.you are evil was there reply lol.

i like to dispatch them as fast as i can.but the lads think its horrible.

so do you feel anything when you dispatch game or not.

Not really . When I first did it felt a bit weird. Not so much sorry for the rabbit but it was a new experience so it was weird . Don't care about it now. If it was a pet I'd feel something but I don't see rabbits having a character or personality so everyone is basically a clone of the last one killed

My young lads turned all anti on me lol..we all divrent..am soft as I always feel something when somethings been killed..not so much that I would want to stop...a sernent respect maybe

but once you tell them about chickens/beef etc were they come from they dont say anything.

My partners boy I bought him a gun when he was 8 and tried eating him into it, starting with targets then taking him hunting but wasn't thrilled.

He's now 15, and has asked for a gun again as he thinks he will enjoy hunting now.

So there's time yet

I think hunter gatherer mindset is in your genes. Not everyone can do it and before the days of commercial meat these people would have either learnt fast or gone hungry.

 

Society allows people to be squeamish about hunting and dispatching their own game to a degree. I've told my littleun from young that it's not really optional or something to have an opinion on, it's just gotta happen.

 

My missus can't dispatch rabbits. She won't even hold a dead one. But she will eat them and ask for seconds. Strange world. Lol.

No, but being honest i get few rabbits pop in my garden , and never enter my head to kill them, ive got a 177 to do so if i wanted . but in the field if rabbit squeals never bothered me or a deer makes a noise the same dont bother me .But some times if your dog ever caught a hare , they can make right bloody noise , like a baby crying , that can go through you a bit

The dispatch of an animal is just a single part of a process, should always be done with respect for that animal.

I always try and get across to the kids that the dispatching is the most important part, it's never fun but it is necessary.

i was just thinking about how strange it is gaz.

when the african programmes are on and the women take hold of any game thats caught etc.

i think its us.with excess food and we dont have to dispatch game or hunt.

its on a plate for us with very little effort.

apart from passing a £10 note over etc.

Always try to despatch as quick as poss and with the minimum amount of fuss.my young uns understand that rabbits need controlling and are used to feed ferrets,dogs and my mates bop.kids are happy to watch me chop up any game and often fight over who gets to feed them to our workers.my eldest lad who's 6 will cry if he don't get a chance of a pic lol.atb dc

My lads been going out with me since around 18 m old used to carry him in a rucksack when ferretting -he will walk around lamping and never complains.he has been all around the UK with me-next season I will take him to Scotland for a week on the rabbits and whatever else gets up .he won an award for star pupil with his school for his knowledge of animals and the countryside .lucky his school don't discourage his interests.they have an animal sanctuary in the grounds run by one of his classmates grandfather's. Rescued woodpeckers,jays etc they also got a flock of chickens that I gave his class to hatch out of the incubator few years back.I drum it into him and his brother and sister to hold thier heads high and be proud of what we do.don't know many 6 yr olds that can sit down and debate with an adult on the reasons why we hunt and manage the countryside.atb dc

Now I'm going to sound like a right wimp but personally I hate killing anything. I agree with Johnny Boy68 that it should be done efficiently and with respect and I'm quite good at killing things, whether neck breaking or with the knife. People I know who keep chickens, ducks or geese often call on me when they need some killed and dressed because they know I'll do it properly.

Everything wants to carry on living, probably even plants if we but knew it, but as Johnny said, it is part of the process and I like meat and believe that wild game has a better life than a lot of farmed animals do, especially broiler chickens, intensively raised pigs etc. so when it needs doing I get on and do it but never lose sight of the fact that I'm ending a life. Guess I'm just an old hippy at heart.

I feel a great deal of satisfaction,hunting can be a very frustrating and time consuming past time ,so to have the quarry in hand and cleanly and quickly despatched can be very satisfying,
