Popular Post Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Nearly had a fricking nightmare this afternoon but turned out OK in the end.Tried a spot I thought was a dead cert but dog said no and that's good enough for this bitch .Walked her back to the road where she pulled a bit at a run in the hedge that lead to a small 4 holder the field side of a double hedge so crawling through a gap I saw the spoil from a distance and walked to it .The place stank of fox ,not necessarily a good thing but the bitch marked thankfully .Netted up the 4 holes ,dog in and sure enough off she went cracking up instantly. This place goes out into the field a bit as it used to be a lot bigger but the farmer ploughed it years ago and it was never dug out so I expected a wait for her to settle.Switched the red brick on and she was 18 m from me so I walked out in the field a bit but she was further along the hedge and baying .Got to about 2 m away when out popped charlie from a new hole I'd not bothered to look for ,complacency on my part as I'd known this place for years .Anyway out pops the bitch and is off right handed towards any sane persons nightmare earth that runs under the road and about 50 m up the lane by where I'd parked .Its an old badger sette that the council had filled in with gabien baskets to prevent road collapse .There was however a hole to the side of the last basket and she was in there ,bollocks .Had visions of road closed signs ,jack hammers ,high vis the lot and all up my yard and a phone call away lol.On with the box ,no sound from her and traced her to the other side the lane in the verge and only .8 deep, result. This is a quiet country lane used by farm folk in the main but as I stood there ,3 cars went by each having a good gander lol.The 4.10 was in the ditch as was the digging kit but I decided ,out of character, I must say to let whatever it was run and put the gun back in the vehicle.Besides I didn't want to get seen with a gun here by Joe public . The bitch was silent in one place which only meant one thing .Dug her in peace ,no more cars and found she was fast to a fox that wasn't going anywhere ,the same fox she, d bolted before I'm sure.Broke her off ,boxed her and tidied up ,thankful she wanst under tarmac or worst still under gabien baskets .The lane had been resurfaced too after the groundworks so any new works would have caused waves locally for sure .When this earth was in its hay day it wouldn't of taken much to dig the sunken tarmac but the beefed up support would of been a bit daunting . 21 Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Out this afternoon on the quad .Had a look at a few places with another member off here and decided on an earth that I thought wouldn't be too testing for a couple of middle aged has beens lol. Dug this spot at .9 and 1.2 before but this afternoon was an eye opener .A bitch on loan was tried first which did a few circuits before settling under a tree at 2 metres ! .We gave her plenty of time to settle but she was out .Before anyone says shit dog ,unknown to me she has had an eye infection that the lad thought she had got over ,combine that with a little bit unfit and there's your answer ,a work in progress .Her eye socket was double the size and very puffy ,red when she showed . Anyway she had tangled with something so in with my bitch Holly .Another run around and finally found her at 1.6 out in the field a bit .Turf was easy but I don't remember the hard baked brash that we had to contend with here and digging was slow with a bar taking 2 inches at a time .2 1/2 hours later broke through to her but we were far from finished .Removing the dog ,the quarry showed briefly and retreated around a corner and out of view .Policy here is to shoot everything so we tunnelled a bit to get a shot and eventually caught up with it by taking off another foot of the hole .Pleased with result ,knackered and had a cold ride home .Would I of liked a result on the break through ,yes ,would I change anything about the bitch ,no .Two satisfied has beens ,lol. 6 Quote Link to post
