Blueboybilly 164
Ive recently bought a pedigree Whippet pup to show at kennel club shows and also to take with me to the working terrier & Leacher shows when I show my Borders. Any of you lads used/using pedigree Whippets for coursing hares, what were they like, do you think they manage ok in big open fields. Ive used Saluki crosses many moons ago and seen Greyhound x Whippets run but I've never seen a pedigree Whippet course. I can only talk from my own experience but I have seen a Pedigree Whippet kill pre ban Hares in big fields single handily on numerous occasions. Also the nose on a whippet is not given the credit that it deserves. What a whippet might lack in terms of top end speed they certainly make up for with their nose ?? Quote Link to post

Chicken_man 1,651
Not one over the years of running 2 to 3 times a week, touch wood lol. Good on the little dog but soft grassy fields are ok ... I've got land here that's more Flint than earth and all jokes aside would destroy a whippets feet .......Run all breeds of runners over years and the flint destroys all their feet in the end.True it takes it toll but I've got an 11 and 5 year old her and their feet are still sound ... The pup is on it every day so hopefully she will be ok to ........ She runs on all kinds of ground but I don't run any dog flint no more and never did for a rabbit. Some nice catches there ... Just a shame she isn't strong enough to bring them all the way back to you .......What lamp you using there Trev? Cheers Quote Link to post

Phil Lloyd 10,738
I think you have to be realistic, where whippets are concerned.... Edited October 4, 2016 by Phil Lloyd 3 Quote Link to post
Maximus Ferret 2,063
Just keep it for what it's good for ... Showing at the kennel club shows and keeping your lap warm ... Leave the working dog shows to working dogs ........ Socks - if half the lurchers at a working dog show worked I'd be surprised, and if the ones that did work caught half of what their owners said they did, then there would be nothing left in the British countryside for genuine lads to catch, lol. And if the ones that DIDN'T work caught half what their owners said they caught there'd be nothing left too . 1 Quote Link to post

lifelong cumbrian 1,826
I don't get this slating whippets, the right one are great little working dogs, I don't have one but have seen plenty both non ped and ped. If i was wanting one for working i would go for a ped working type, only thing wrong with whippets is the price of many of them. they are a bit of a cash cow. I only work rabbits by the way. 3 Quote Link to post
