Pedigree Whippets

Ive recently bought a pedigree Whippet pup to show at kennel club shows and also to take with me to the working terrier & Leacher shows when I show my Borders.

Any of you lads used/using pedigree Whippets for coursing hares, what were they like, do you think they manage ok in big open fields.

Ive used Saluki crosses many moons ago and seen Greyhound x Whippets run but I've never seen a pedigree Whippet course.

 

Lovely pup that mate. Why wouldn't it do ok on most types of general work including coursing, when it was legal?

I cought a few hares years ago with my kc reg whippets, dogs and bitches. And seen other whippets do the same.

Wouldn't say they would've done as well on big open fields with hares given any sort of law, but they kept me more than happy. Again, lovely pup that

The kc registered whippets are the ones with the coursing blood in them. There's a few lads catching rabbits and daytime hares with theirs still mate. I was surprised at a few lads whippets to be fair. Lovely pup and all the besti

i had none ped racing whippet bitch, great little dog caught rabbits in the lamp no prob, some of the males down the track, were 30-34 lb and a lad used two brothers on foxes regular strong little game dogs if i was having a whippet 1st choice would none ped racing stock

Ive had non ped racing whippets and cannot fault them a 32lb dog is able to take all legal quarry, and some pre ban could take charley mine did. A working whippet will give 100 percent, most lurchermen realistically would only need a whippet for the amount of work they do. Great little dogs that are a joy to own,

That's a cracker of a whippet mate. Very good feet. Best of luck with whatever you do with him. You might even have a good little team if your terriers Bush rabbits, I just think it turns every walk into a hunt if you go the right spots. Your whippet would stay in great shape and would thank you for letting him do what every fiber of his body wants to do. Do you know if he is from any particular line of whippets ?

Hello brenner, thanks for your comments, she's from the Colooney show kennel they are from Ireland but moved to Scotland over a year ago.

Her pedigree is all show dogs but as you know most Whippets will chase anything that's in front of them.

My Borders put up plenty so she will get her chance.

If I wanted a bigger type whippet od just get a whippet greyhound first x.

True lads. but some people just Like the breed .and as the man says, most will hunt anyway , show or not. As most whippet fans know.. there have been some really good dogs out of "strike while The iron is hot" and he was the result of a working line out crossed to a show dog. I believe the idea was to put conformation back into a tightly bred line as well as the obvious reasons for injecting fresh blood. That dog really threw whippets with fire and stamina. I've liked Whippets since I was a nipper, yep, I liked Whippets BEFORE it was FASHIONABLE to like Whippets! .

If you want a little companion dog that you can also have a bit of sport with, then a Whippet would suit most recreational hunters.

Lol same here, I've loved whippets sice I can remember, before they were fashionable, when they started to get fashionable, and even when they get slagged off and slated on here, for being too soft, shit coat, shit feet, no stamina blah blah blah, by the majority of egotistical OIKS on here.

I couldn't give a monkey's chuff if they don't look 'hard' enough, or whatever. In fact I'm glad they don't, to me it's part of their charm. I know, and have seen what these gentle looking dogs are capable of. I f***ing love whippets!

The problem is mate there's whoppers and there's whippets.

 

The lads who slate them have probably seen the thin skinned fragile type and not the more robust capable type.

 

My mate has got one of each. The latter is just like a small lurcher. He's as keen as they come and doesn't get knocked up any more than an average lurcher. In fact he's not taken a bad knock yet and is almost 2 years old. His feet are sound, stamina isn't an issue, he will hunt all day. Nose is fantastic. The list goes on.

 

The little bitch is super fragile, she looks at a blade of grass the wrong way and she opens up. I've lost count of the bad knocks she's had this year. Tissue paper would be stronger than her skin. Her nose isn't as good and she's not as switched on.

they would genuinely surprise a few people , as they are as hard as nails and will literally run anything you let them!? dont get me wrong there not going to be as efficient on certain game as a lurcher but obviously if this was your chosen quarry dont chose a whippet......but.....as handy little allrounders they are not to shabby!

 

just a note the fox was shot and the whippets were used to track him down!

Just keep it for what it's good for ... Showing at the kennel club shows and keeping your lap warm ... Leave the working dog shows to working dogs ........
