3/4 Greyhound ?

Recommended Posts

This topic has probably been done to death... But just wondering is there many lads out there who still use genuine 3/4 greyhound types. Is there still room in the Lurcher game for dogs with this amount of sight hound.? Be interesting to see, haven't seen a 3/4 bred on here for a while

Defo yes, my pups sire was a 3/4 cross and I think they can be ideal candidates for good all rounders, In most cases you have worked the F1 and decided you have a good base but feel you need to add some speed/height drive - so it seems like a good way to go forward without throwing too many variables in the mix.

Personally, I prefer to work with herding dog composites,..( plenty of sheepdog savvy )....but, in reality,...a fast dog that can use its thinkers is often a far superior critter.....The three quarter bred is often the next step forward for men who are not satisfied with the original half cross, base product...

When it works out , it is a good thing,..when it don't,...well, it's not so good.. :cray:

Facts are, it's generally all down to what type of hunting dog that consistently, brings home the bacon...

Most of my working dogs have been 3/4 GH with the rest made up of either DH or Collie, i still run a 3/4 sight hound [GH/Whippet mix] 1/4 beddy, iam a big fan of 3/4 bred dogs, although if i was looking for one now, i would have to look at a good Saluki/GH mix rather than 3/4 GH, when i was younger and running Hares most days, i couldnt get hold of good Saluki blood, i saw very few Saluki,s good or bad.

3/4 Greyhound 1/4 Deerhound. She's a cracking bitch and I'm happy enough with her. Doesn't miss much, jumps well, retrieves live to hand, very intelligent and very loyal.

I have seen a few of this breed work over the years, and the good ones were very good. most of the ones we kept were rough coated. I still have a 3/4 but she is 3/4 whippet x DH/grey

Got a greyhound with 1/8 whippit 1/8th saluki in it, brought up as a lurcher and works exactly the same as a lurcher, hunts by scent , bushes, jumps, ferrets very steady , works with terriers and lamps of slip when on my own, only thing I can fault is the ground wants to be ok or he might be lame after a hard run!

Many moons ago an old acquaintance had a pure racing greyhound from Ireland, it was from a long line of track dogs and demanded a top price, he was given it for free because it refused to chase the electric hare, the reason it would not chase the hare was it was a bit more intelligent than an average grew and new the hare was not real, but in the field it worked everything as good or better than most lurchers I,ve seen, it lamped, retrieved jumped well and had a wicked turn of speed but it's crowning moment was when he took it to Scotland and it coursed and brought down a fully grown red stag on its own, an achievement I have only known the once
