Speed will always find a flaw in a dogs framework no matter how well it was reared . Sometimes you can say that an injury is caused by this or that but was that injury lying latent to be exposed by speed?

 

Having a lurcher to be pts for nothing other than poor feet is heartbreaking but to bred off one no matter what age that shows characteristics of carrying a fault is borderline criminal

 

But to return to the original topic, as a pure bred dog for the hunting lark, surely the saluki ticks a lot more boxes than the pure greyhound

I have seen for maybe five greys reared from six weeks to working adults none compared to a average lurched Lur her bred animal they just Cana keep killing rabbits in numbers they get knocked toes etc stoppers taken off slight hard ground find it difficult controll there speed so many negatives depends what yas want seeing them drop on a nights shining became a feature off the greys . Positives explosive speed to long ears looks impressive then the Neva ending decreasing twists turns has the lungs begin ta burn feck that soone watch a whipp knock one around fa a minute a so.atb bunnys.

Can't comment on greys and you never get the full picture watching other peoples dogs, but when I started running my first lurcher I couldn't believe the injuries/time off he got compared to the salukis

In my passed experience, of keeping both the pure greyhound and pure saluki for hunting, the saluki allways came out on top, as regards avoiding injuries and death. Greyhounds are so much more prone to injuries and getting killed then salukis.

The pure saluki in my opinion, is a very tough robust dog, i seen them run on ground that would smash a greyhound and come out good.

My first exposure ta pure sal was a long time ago I was maybe thirteen a old fella owned this crime bitch she was used handhold has a lurcher she nailed bolting rabbis took occasionall long ear and liked a bird a 2 back then I was all eyes and ears he hunted this bitch on crock tips and just about some places lots would avoid there's no comparison with the 2 breeds really silly to compare ,but like has been said the mix of lurcher with grey blood and others got the uk the finest hare killers in the world bar none that's a fact. Plus some very decent all rounders of all game .atb bunnys.

I have a pure saluki and she will take all quarry, I also have line bred saluki/greyhounds one of which was absolutely top class, I don't think that many dogs would be as good as her saluki or not, I'm a big admirer of Salukis but how many have won the forley cup and plenty have been entered.

Just because one person doesn't like a particular breed it doesn't mean you should call them, variety is the spice of life and let's just enjoy our own dogs, after all we should run our dogs for ourselves and not others.

Incidentally has anyone any experience with Picardy lurchers, I would be interested to know if anyone works this breed.

There are a couple of members on here with picardy blood in their dogs, don't know if it's just picardy though. Keeganrees and zx12edge I think got the dogs with picardy blood, they're the ones I remember off the top of my head

All this talk about winning cups ect is bullshit IMO. Does a breed have to win a cup to be classed as a good dog? yous lot that think so have lesser brain power then the shittest of saluki.

Back before this bullshit Internet came about, when men were men and good dogs were good dogs. Back in 80s 90s were a lot of deerhound xs. And some bloody gooduns. But hold on they must have been shit like the saluki. I for one can't remember them winning the be all and end all Forley. Give your heads a wobble for fucks sake an go run your dogs ,,, I'm out

Very few pures did or get run in the big comps plenty of saluki x,s but these comps are primarily numbers on the doors rather than "coursing ability". The number of lads that actually work pures regularley is very small compared to other running dogs but to witness a pacy saluki work and course game is truly a thing to behold and that in UK is one of the reasons the saluki lovers have them certainly not for matching.
