Mark r 208
Hi I've wouldn't mind rearing a couple of Lambs for the table not bottle feeding or any of that. Just buy them put them to grass on our paddock the have them butcherd. What's the best time to Buy them? And what are the classed as like store lambs or what?
Fieldsporthunter 1,864
Couple pet lambs in the spring get them butcherd end of summer would be the way I would do it. Do you have a holding number?
Neal 1,869
Why eat lamb when you can enjoy mutton? P.S. that's a genuine question...not a euphemism.

Neal 1,869
I've never tried hogget; how does it compare? It always amazes me that lamb is so readily available yet mutton is so hard to come by.

Hydropotesinermis 724
I like hogget, stronger flavour than lamb but not too tough. You can't beat a good mutton stew though.

kanny 20,611
The farms that do goats milk products can't give the male kid goats away and spring goat is as good eating as anything imo i wish i could find a good supply. ..just some food for thought. ..literally
Yokel Matt 918
You'll need to get a CPH number etc but I'd highly recommend it. I've just done my second one - had a store lamb first time and just finished making faggots from the trim of a Ryeland hogget today. I was planning on getting a post up on it over the weekend. Good luck!
gamerooster 1,179
Second that about the goats, ten times better than lamb in my eyes, it's absolutely beautiful
man o kent 269
Id go for mutton any day of the week. Had a ewe done, and she was about 2 and a half, so quite young mutton. Best flavour I have ever tasted, and super tender when roasted long and slow. She actually ate more like beef, With some lovely marbling running through the meat. Try it, you wont be disappointed
