My adult dogs get the ocasional pat,,for a retrieve ,,, If it's a pup and your training it,,,and it's responding well to treats ,,,keep it up and gradually reduce the treats and replace with praise .. 1 Quote Link to post

My adult dogs get the ocasional pat,,for a retrieve ,,, If it's a pup and your training it,,,and it's responding well to treats ,,,keep it up and gradually reduce the treats and replace with praise .. spot on, tomo , funny thing is with old Bryn when he was a pup, i started with treats ,and throwing balls as he loved chasing balls, was good retriever had many 30s of him , so some weeks he would have brought in 60 rabbits , lamping , but his retrieving as he got older slackened off, prob drop short couple yards.Now Buck never really botherd with dummys etc or treets, but likes to carry rabbits , will bring them right up to you from any long distance , but does like to hold them in mouth lol, he dont bust them up, there quite clean rabbits . just give him few secs with it, then take it off him . he is the better retriever of the 2 dogs Quote Link to post
trigger2 3,170 Posted September 19, 2016 Report Share Posted September 19, 2016 i always rely on loads of praise when they start retrieving. never fed treats to a dog when doing any training except teaching them to sit. i give the occasional fuss and praise with my older dogs expecially if i am having a night when i start getting a decent size bag.
