Scallywag 78
I'm still waiting impatiently to start on my first permission on an organic smallholding up the road from me. I thought it was all sorted but now it turns out that although the bloke is happy for me to get started, the woman isn't sure because she feels sorry for the rabbits! I asked how she felt about the pigs but because someone comes over and takes them awaty and kills them off site she's not affected I've also got to do it completely secretly so that their 10 year old daughter never finds out what I'm doing. I think I've finally argued myself and can get going soon. I'm waiting for a more experienced friend to come over and have a look with me to give me advice since this is my first permission and I don't want to mess it up. But how wierd is ti to raise your child on a pig farm but hide this stuff from them? I'd see it as an opportunity to teach my child new skills........... Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
I was raised on a farm and we used to grow our own veg and slaughter our own animals. I remember being about 4 or 5 and being told to keep out of the barn because the sheep were being killed. Of course, being told not to do something was like a red rag to a bull to me at that age so I crept in and watched and I dont remember it bothering me at all, I was quite fascinated with all the bits and bobs being discarded as the sheep were slaughtered and after they had left I remember poking around at the heads and stuff with a stick. Children can handle gory stuff a lot easier than many adults as they having better coping mechanisms to deal with weird stuff, its only as an adult we learn fears and inhibitions. They sound like tossers, I could not be arsed with all that yes men stuff required for gaining permission, but hey if it gets you where you want to be, then go for it Quote Link to post
Scallywag 78
Yeah, same here SJM. Actually I was raised on a dairy farm but I wasn't protected from stuff and remember being fascinated by the AI man!! It's a pain but I really want the permission so I'm being very patient and understanding and hoping to educate them which is a laugh cos I'm hardly an expert. I have a few friends who are antis and we've managed to debate without falling out so far so I'm used to it Quote Link to post
