.17 Hornet Reloading

Recommended Posts

I'm about to put in a variation to step up from the .22LR but I'm really struggling to decide what to go for. Cost is a major factor so will put in for a HMR but with the time it's taking to turn around a variation here in Kent I'm trying to think of the future.

Not interested in deer or anything bigger than a fox. Not about to shoot crows and pigeons for a £1 a pop, rabbits either come to that. Would love more reach obviously but only to medium ranges and has to be cost effective. .17 hornet seems a reasonable upgrade and would be something to shoot with if hmr ammo gets suspect again or is not available. Question is at what cost?

So what do you guys pay for reloaded .17 hornet? And how much would the total equipment setup set me back?

The price of equipment varies mate. Second hand kit in good condition would be your best route if cost is the number one priority.

I reload for three main reasons, and in this order of priority - 1) A greater degree of consistency from round to round which helps maintain accuracy, 2) Availability of ammo, 3) Cost.

How much then? Roughly -

A tub of powder (say £35) should fill around 600 rounds, maybe a few more.

600 Hornady V-Max (say £125).

Small rifle primers (say £25).

Brass? 100 Hornady (say £70). Obviously this figure will depend on how many times you re-use the brass.

So on these figures I would expect each shot to cost you somewhere between 38p and 44p.

It has been a long time since I left school so my maths is not the best these days ( ;)), but this should you an idea.
