Krav Maga

Recommended Posts

I'm making an effort to improve my fitness, following my well-documented health problems (which I won't bore you with again).

I did a fair bit of judo in my younger years, and fought Muay Thai right into my late 30s, so I have some martial arts experience - but I've been away from it all for a good few years now.

Any-hoo, there's a group near me that teaches Krav Maga, and I quite fancy giving it a go....

Anyone here ever done it, and what do you reckon to it ?

It depends what you class as " past it " in my opinion........we are around the same age and barring a year off with illness a couple of years ago ive not had a spell of more than a few weeks off of t

What age are you mate if you don't mind me asking?.......when I used to take the kids Ju Jitsu there was a big fat bloke there and I have to be honest and say he was still a big fat bloke 18 months later.

Now I'm 45 and no lightweight myself but I still play football and I also believe swimming works a lot of muscle groups in a fairly easy way.

I try and push myself to train at football twice a week and also play on the weekend.....ill never be 13.5 again but it does keep me just below 16 and fairly lively on my feet.

Recovery takes longer at this age but you feel shit if you miss any for a week or so.

There's plenty out there for all ages and abilities including walking football for the late 50s and over lads.

May be worth a look and you don't have to spend your time with any would be Steven Segals ! Lol

I worked with a guy who went to Krav Maga classes twice a week. He was fit, but then he was only in his twenties. From what I gathered from him it was more self-defence than fitness orientated.

Have you considered Sumo? :D

Reported for obese-ism ! Just because the washing machine can move across the kitchen quicker than I can.....

I'm 53 Wilf, so in truth I'm probably past it now. I know and accept that however hard I might try, I'll never be as fit and strong as I was even in my 30s. Im looking to use it to increase my strength and agility a bit really - I certainly don't want to be the next Jason Bourne !

I think I'm drawn to "combat sports" because I've done that type of thing in the past.

And at the risk of having my sexuality questioned, I can't stand football ! :D

Give it a go pal Krav Maga is actually quite good for fitness training as far as combat sports go and if that's the sort of thing you enjoy you're more likely to stick at it and that's the most important thing

Now, come clean..... you've picked the martial arts/defense discipline that has the highest attendance from single 20 year old athletic type strumpets! eh!

Yeah, I should say it'll have your pulse sufficiently in the 'cardio' range. :D

Of that's true, where do I sign up ?

I'd feel a bit silly ninja-larping in my 50's,but you might enjoy it

In all honesty,if you're unfit I'd say the risk of injury will be quite high.

Anything which involves a lot of kicking and grappling/throwing is going to put strain on your joints at times, but then again if you know how to kick, throw and fall correctly already maybe you'll be alright.

Boxing's very safe and tends to be fitness oriented,so that'd be my choice in your shoes.

So you don't like football, but you like the sound of the idea of rolling around and grappling other sweaty men on a mat in the gym? :hmm:

You're right you should not have your sexuality questioned :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Go for it, when I had time to do it, there was a guy there in his late 50's who had a massive heart attack some years previously, one of the best guys to spar with technically, even at his age.

It depends what you class as " past it " in my opinion........we are around the same age and barring a year off with illness a couple of years ago ive not had a spell of more than a few weeks off of training since i was about 10 years old,not counting injuries of course.......ok i accept that very few people take strength and fitness to the levels i have over the years but even so as long as you keep your goals realistic the personal achievement that can be gained through training can serve you all your life i very much doubt i,ll ever stop training until i physically cant do it anymore i just start getting all edgey and aggressive when i dont train but focused and motivated when i do train its just about attitude i think....you say you wont be as fit and strong as you was....why not ?.....im probably as strong and wouldnt be far off the fitness i had in my thirties if i approached training in a certain way but again you have to be realistic with your reasoning..... i still hit a heavy bag, speed ball, jump rope even spa the odd few rounds but i dont kid myself im nowhere near as agile and supple as years ago,my speed and timing is way off, recovery takes that much longer etc........but the wonderful feeling of strength and fitness is still there and thats motivation enough at our age.......give yourself realistic goals and achieve them one at a time,if you,ve fought, wrestled, grappled etc before then it wont take long for your muscle memory to kick in and then its just about your own challenge with yourself to achieve the higher goals you have set......i wish you the very best, returning to a high-ish level of fitness after a long lay off is hard enough for youngsters,it takes balls to do it later in life so fair play and good luck to you.
