shropshire mole 190
This is my 5 month old beddy whippet She is doing well, doing some simple recall in a field calling by name & whistle and using cooked chicken treats as a reward each time. Have tried other bribery treats, but she responds to high end treats only She does not seem very interested in fetching a ball or toy back to me. Any ideas/thoughts on the best way to teach? Blueboybilly 164
Penny did a really good article that will help you with retrieving and recall. http://www.thehuntinglife.com/the-value-of-tug-games-with-puppies/ Really helped me and my young whippet with retrieving to hand about a year ago. You need patience with this (as you do with any training method). Cheers BBB 1 Quote Link to post

bird 9,868
Got a young dog the same won't chase ball dummy anything but will bring a rabbit to you good luck as been said above same here,Buck great bringing back game, to you prob my best retriever , where as Bryn loves fetching balls to you to throw, he been good at retrieving when he was younger. But not as good as Buck, and dont think Buck ever had more than say 3-4 retrieves(dummy) in 4 years, if he can carry it he will bring it back lol. i think some dogs are more natural retrievers than others, and the herding types deff seem more keen than other x lurchers, that what i found in 30 years using different type xs Quote Link to post
Wales1234 5,490
I can throw a ball or dead rabbit and all 3 of my old lurchers will just stand and look at me stupid but all will retrieve rabbit and shot fox no problem ! whitefeet4190 1,725
Got a young dog the same won't chase ball dummy anything but will bring a rabbit to you good luck as been said above None of my Lurchers will retrieve a ball they will chase it then leave it, but never have a problem with them retrieving rabbits so I wouldn't worry too much mate as long as they come back when they are called the rest will follow ? Nice pup by the way Atb Quote Link to post
