Hand Forging Knives In The Woods

Recommended Posts

Had a few days on a course at a friends forge.

Started with a small piece of steel bar and a block of wood each and we made these.

No cutout steel here just forged using charcoal and elbow grease the traditional way.

They are brill. How have you Attached the handles? Loving the sheepsfoot

The tang is burnt into the handle and glued

The sheepsfoot is nice, elm handle too. A very useful shape.

That's awesome. Thanks for the reply. Did you pre-drill the handle at all? And did you use a primitive type glue or standard epoxy resin?

Recently finished my first sheepsfoot file knife and really appreciate the shape of it, safe and useful

Yes pre drilled then burnt on, used epoxy mixed with wood ash. You can use primitively glues but they take longer to cure. Everything else apart from epoxy was pretty much the old way of making knives.
