Moorman 1 1,376
Mine grabbed a ferret on her first time out with them but she must have known her mistake as she let go and the ferret was fine. Since then she's been great with any ferret of any colour, on one occasion when she was in a tree the ferret grabbed the rabbit which then bolted and she waited until the rabbit pulled free before taking it. Fourtrak73 was there that day and I find it amazing these hawks can be so clever, almost like dogs at times. I had mine back out late yesterday when the temperature dropped a little. She seemed to follow the sprocker better and was trying to catch stuff in the ridiculously thick cover. She ended up catching a big rat but I didn't get a picture as I was too concerned with getting it pinned down and her off the thing before it bit her. I actually like rat hawking but it gets the heart going when I think she hasn't got a good hold. They most certainly are switched on. Last season I was on a bank above the bury hawk on fist ferret in, my mate was on opposite bank looking towards me, he nodded that rabbit was peering out of the hole. I was stock still. I didn't realise that the ferret was holding the rabbit. All of a sudden there was an explosion as the rabbit with ferret attached rocketed into the air spinning over and over, she went , I let her go she seemed to stall in slow motion the rabbit and ferret parted about ten foot in the air due the steep bank. The ferret went left handed and the rabbit to the right as he hit the ground she nailed him. It was plain to see that she avoided the ferret and went for the rabbit I like the teamwork aspect of the hawk ,dog and ferret. Sounds like yours is switching onto the sprocker nicely will make good sport. 2 Quote Link to post
pointer 543
Yeah the teamwork is great to see. I didn't think I would be into flying harris hawks together but the way they learn to hunt together is some sight. When they do fly together our hawks rarely grab each other's catch only getting involved again if the quarry escapes by pulling free. They behave better than some dogs I've owned. 2 Quote Link to post

fourtrak73 1,334
If it wasn't for Alfie we wouldn't get half of what we do get, that rabbit in the wall should have got away just pleased the bird managed to hang on 1 Quote Link to post
