Canal Carp

Recommended Posts

used to fish a decent stretch of canal years ago with a mate, nice quite spot on a bend with overgrown trees on the far bank,we had lot fish over the season but nothing bigger than about 15ib.one thing for sure though these fish were in immaculate condition, fins and mouth curtain was perfect likely hood never been caught before which was an added bonus.

anyway talking to him today and decided we do few days soon, conversation turned to the general size we had caught previous,he reckons he heard of a spot that a 30ib mirror was caught but its all a bit hush hush lol,now thats some fish for a canal or is it?

have any you lads caught big carp on the canals?

il stick a pic up of the 30ib when i catch it :D

yep we did catch lot on zigs during the colder months far more than I ever caught on a lake although saying that seemed to get better standard of fish from the lakes using this method

There were pictures of a 40lb+ Mirror from the Grand Union Canal, i expect it came from a lake that flooded

Canals see very little sustained pressure, if i was going to target a stretch, i would be baiting with 10kg to 20kg of particle every 48 hours for a few weeks before i fished it... also use plastic baits as the crays will be a nightmare :)

some big grass carp in lancs canal

my biggest carp came out the lancs canal 28 1/2 lbs also caught a lot of grassies from there on the other side of the motorway biggest was 21lbs but caught loads of mid teens. Had to fish stupid light for them, size 16 hook on a 4lbs hook length with a dog biscuit superglued to the hook and a couple split shot 3-4ft down the line to give a bit of casting weight and hold the bait against the (very slow) flow.
