It helps more if you can out run the dog lol.   I

Cows and calves can be a deadly combination especially if you add a dog to the equation!

That'll do for the curious and bullocks/calves but you can forget it working on a protective heffer. Always carry a stick in a field of cows and have thee dog loose but at heel

always sarcrafice the dog,

My old dog would happily sacrifice himself for the rest of us and proved it several times. He used to round on them if they were behind us and go fuuckin mental barking and dishing out pain when they got too close. Never worried about cows when old Cooper was in the field with me. Gone but never forgotten

My old bitch used to give them a good nip if they got too close when told to "touch em" and saved me twice in her time.

One night after a few charges off around 30 bullocks I thought I was safe because of a new pignet fence and two strands of barb wire until they came through the fence leaving me knowhere to go, every time they charged up the feild that bitch held her ground stoped them and turned them back untill we reached a wood at the other side of the field.

This is all strange to me, I have been charged many times with and without dogs and i have always stood my ground and I have never been touched. I thought that is what you are meant to do, I have never seen anyone run from cows before, meat or dairy. I guess the cows must be more aggressive in the UK. My old boss got charged by elephants in Zimbabwe and was told to stand his ground as running is the worst thing to do, I reckon I would have $hat my pants, I saw the photos and they are HUGE!

Bullocks can be inquisitive and a pain in the a**e especially if you have a dog and say laying nets. Cows and calves CAN be a different matter and their maternal instinct kicks in to protect the calf. As said previously the dog is the focus of their attention and naturally the dog runs to its owner whether scared or for guidance and that is when the situation can get serious.

It's pure primal instinct for the cows to try to drive away dogs when they have calves around. They instinctively know the dog is a carnivore. As others have said, the young inquisitive bulls can be a pain and a bit boisterous but they can be easily scattered, unlike a group of cows with young calves when the herd instinct kicks in around an animal they know could kill or injure their young..

I went to shoot a heifer once, I was holding the pistol in my right, the b*****d charged right at me, smashed my left wrist to pieces as I tried to shut myself in a stable. I had to sit in the stable with my bone sticking out while I waited for someone to come shoot the cow.

I was shooting a lot of bull calves at the time and the farmers would constantly leave the calves in with the cows. I refused to go in with em until they took the calf out for me.
