If you thought the parents were good enough to breed from why would a colour bother you ? Half the reason terrier work has gone tits upwards is people breeding for colour or stamp, work is the reason

There's no such mythical animal as a "pure Patterdale " , they've got border, bull and Black and tan in the mix. They're a relatively new type, show me any pictures of a family of "pure Patterdale "

Rippem the reason we all say it's a throw back is because we all know there's no such thing as a pure Patterdale. You're getting obsessed with a piece of paper and a colour. The line of terriers I ke

Okay I see to different scenarios here, man A has been breeding his terriers for many years for himself and possibly a few friends, an odd pup shows up in a litter not a problem as they know full well what's in the pot. Man B buys a dog or possibly also a bitch or at a later stage goes back to the same man or his buddies for a service, litter of pups 4 black 1 white in that scenario it more than likely the peddlar has had you over, bottom line is very few peddlars are honest or have morals, digging dogs and money peddlars liars are a very bad combo so expect to be turned over or do your research

What some of you are saying is that if you went to a breeder for a Shepard for a dog to protect the family and it was crossed with a Mal and the breeder lied about the breeding it shouldn't matter as long as it protects. That's nonsense. And every time you keep breeding out side a line you get inconsistent litters. And then when you bred a different bred to another bred your taking a gamble on how they will turn out.thats called a mutt. Might as well go to the pound and pick a dog. And I believe if a breeder tells you how the parents peds are they pop up traits of another breed I think that's a B.S move to sell a pup. Why else would the breeder lie if his cross is so great?

The difference there is you're buying a pure bred gaurd dog..you're buying into the pure bred thinking & you're paying as such. But say you were buying a renowned strain of mongrel junk yard dog normally black in colour & a litter throws up a white one. Whats the big deal? It stands as much chance of being a good guard as the others. Say you bought your pure bred shepherd & he is pure bred but turns out a crap guard dog wouldnt you & your family be better off with a decent guard dog thats half Mal?

if half on here woried about a terriers working ability and not colour and looks I think the working terrier would be in a better situation rippem if you end up with a white pup out of a litter you obviously haven't done your home work if white is not for you

Could not give a flying fcuk what colour a terrier is as long as it does what i expect from it,work comes 1st in my eyes everytime, was only giving an example.

You're doing it wrong if you're hitting the hammer Pablo.

rippem,

are sire and dam related? On which side do you not trust the breeding?

Imy asking if you had pats that you were told had no other breeds in it and they turned out white or black and tan would you believe the breeder or would you know because of the colors being white or black and tan that there was other blood I it? Or would you tell everyone, HEY GUYS I GOT WHITE PATS FOR SALE! AND THE OTHER HALF OF THE LITTER IS BLACK AND TAN!
There in lies your problem IMO genuine terriermen should not be interested in selling dogs. Terriers should be given & got for free amongst genuine lads..

this I agree with. But when it comes to dogs we shouldn't lie about the peds or the dogs.if I told you I have a white litter of pats and show you the parents working would you take it and breed off it knowing that he had white pats? And would you believe there is such thing as a white pat?

wasn't referring to your post fat man. I just get annoyed by people putting a dog at a low level by appearance. rippem if the pups parents were good enough to be bred from why would colour matter and if the white pup they produced was a good worker why not breed from parents again. it would be better than getting a pup from the unknown again stick with what you got if the working ability is good

Completely agree lads have to be as honest as possible about both lines and std. of work. Thing is a lot of pedigrees are passed on by word of mouth & genuine mistakes can occur. If I witnessed several terriers of a pat line that worked to std. Yes I would take one work it & breed off it if it was good enough. Why not? Pats are mongrels!

dillydog, I meant to say what if you were told there was no Lakeland or Russle in the blood and it those type popped up. Would you question the breeder? And I see a lot of folks say that there could be Lakeland or bull or whatever back in the ped. But after the 4 gen on back wouldn't it be so distance that you would have to win the lottery to bring it back up to the front? Or call it a fluke..

It's human nature to question things when they crop up unexpectedly, I don't think I'd be any different. If you were happy with the work I'd gift the coloured pup away or PTS. It may be a throw back, it may be bullshit breeding, but as I said the work should be first and foremost.

Your dead right bud , And that what people done when crossing different breeds up or back in lines the know nothing really about . doesn't work out in later crosses there after to breed off.

Your missing the whole point, there is no such thing as a pure Patterdale. The whole makeup of every single line of black's has fell, border, bull, Belington and just about anything else that did it's job back in the day
