Birr Castle Game Fair 2016

Birr Castle is a large Castle in the town of Birr, Co Offaly, and situated amid the rich pastures of the deep South of Ireland. This beautiful Castle is one of Ireland’s “Green Jewels “ and houses award-winning gardens, Great Telescope, and Ireland’s largest Treehouse. Presentally the Castle is the seat of the seventh Earl of Rosse . The family still lives in the castle to this day. This was the venue last weekend for the annual Irish Game & Country Fair.

We had an early start on Sunday morning, with the alarm clock going off at 4.30am. After scurrying around the house, loading up the car and getting on the road, we arrived at Birr Castle three and a half hours later. It was not long before we joined up with all the rest of the good northern people who had already travelled down the day before for the racing. This was to be the start of a beautiful and most memorable day for us at Birr Castle Game Fair.

I can honestly say this year was the biggest and best Game Fair ever at Birr Castle , and exceeded all our expectations. Every year this Game Fair goes from strength to strength. The weather was beautiful, the atmosphere was electric, and plenty of bargains to be had along the way. What an added bonus.

We had a good walk around the game fair and visited the many stands and other attractions on the way. Charlie Keenan and Richard Cadell stands were busy decking out our sports men and women for the season that lies ahead. Stephen Smyth of Barbour was there with his welcoming hand, and Emmet Mc Court was hard at his work dishing out his prize winning recipes and tasty food.

The sunshine and brilliant weather brought out all the good country sporting men and women for a sporting few days out, before the summer showing and racing season comes to an end. I love Birr, because it gives me a chance to meet up with so many of the sporting fraternity that I would probably only speak to on Facebook.

Jenny and Willie OMeara was there with their two beautiful dogs. For a lady of small stature, Jenny can handle her two very large canine friends with great ease. My dear friends from Sligo, Ritchie and Patricia Verden and Gene Gallagher stopped off for a chat. What lovely people.

Time passes so quickly when you are enjoying yourself, and all too soon it was time to head back to the show ring. As I was given the honor this year to judge the Whippets at Birr, it was an extra special day for myself. In all three rings the standard and breeds this year was of top quality in the Canine world.

I have no Racing Results, but here are the Showing Results:

Jennifer Gately started the showing going, by doing a wonderful job judging the children's/ladies and gents handling classes. It takes a good woman to do a mans job and Jennifer you certainly came out in flying colours.

And Finally, I would like to thank the Judges on the day for a first class job carried out. To Shane Lee and the Roscrea Team, as ever a very efficent crew of people who carried out their duties in a very professional manner. Your organisation was meticulous and you proved it on the day. Stephen Mc Gonigle was excellent in the main arena with his very interesting displays and performances and gave poor Edwin Dash a hard time. I couldent believe Edwin could run so fast.

Bluebell and Billy Harpur were there capturing our moments of glory. As I was judging this year, I did not get taking as many photographs as I would like. All photographs are up on the various sites at the moment.

And Finally, finally, I always leave the best to last. This accolade goes out to Albertj Titterington and his lovely wife Irene, and their Co Directors for a great weekend at Birr Castle. Albertj without you and your brilliant team of helpers this top class Game Fair would not be possible or so successful. So many of our Canine folk look forward to your 3 Great Game Fairs of the year, Shanes Castle, and Birr Castle, and now Montalto to follow on Saturday 24th and Sunday the 25th Sept 16.

Through the dark cold days and nights of winter and when the snow hits the window, we will gather round the fire, and reminnis about our moments of glory at your Game Fairs, and all the other Dog shows, and organisers up and down the country who also gave us so much joy and entertainment during the year.

Albert, May you and Irene have good health and happiness and continue to run your top Game Fairs for many years to come. Albert you do so much for Country sports, and Charities never documented, and work so hard behind the scenes to make things happen, from the bottom of my heart I truly thank you. I cannot put words in place to praise you enough. Thank you again this year for all the lovely memories of Birr Castle 2016 , and look forward to seeing you again at Montalto, Ballyinahinch Game Fair, Co Down on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September 16 for the Final Game Fair of 2016.

The Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions Saturday 7thSeptember 24
Laurencetown is famous for its green fields, ancient buildings, walled gardens and extensive lawns stretching down to the River Bann. But as well as these famous landmarks, Laurencetown can add another string to its bow by adding the annual Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions to its attractions and venue.
Saturday was one of the warmest days of the year with the sun shinning down continuously. I got burned alive but all well worth it. Our Country Sportsmen, women and children came out to this now annual dog show to enjoy the last days of the summer sunshine.
Our summer Dog shows have become canine excursions from all parts of the country North and South of the Border. Saturday was no exception with a good turnout of Terriers, Lurchers, Whippets and Strong dogs.
And wait for it, the big surprise of the day and what a pleasant surprise that was. The McGrath Racing Club arrived unexpectedly for a family day out to support the show. And guess what they acted on the spot with an impromptu few races to the joy of many of the racing fraternity at the show.
The childrens handling class was first on the list and judged by Marian Cree. What a turnout of children in the ring on Saturday. I can still see the smile on Clodagh Gentle face on winning 1st with her   Whippet Clive. These young boys and girls are our sportsmen and women of tomorrow. I have no doubt in my mind that these little people will carry on the sport after our day. Well done Marian and congratulations to all.

LBKs DOG SHOW AND RACEDAY SUNDAY 1stSEPTEMBER 24
Scrabo Tower is one of Northern Irelands most iconic landmarks and stands majestically on the hill 540 feet above sea level. Beneath the pathway to Scrabo Tower lies the famous family run farm Scrabo Cottage Farm with its beautiful landscapes, scenic views, and a birds eye view right across Belfast. This was the venue for the LBKs Dog Show and Race day Sunday 1stSeptember 24.
As venues go for shows, this was up there among the best. I can honestly say I have never seen such a display of Plaques, Trophys and first class Rosettes on display, and all up for grabs on the day. Dogs and Bitches in every category were split up and each allocated their own Championship and reserve and at the end of the day an Overall Champion and Reserve.
Everything was planned meticulously, and all of the day went without a hitch. The rings were well spaced out, toilet, Burger stand, Country Sports stand, brilliant racetrack, and a bouncy castle for the wee people.
The views from this venue were to die for. With the shadow of Scrabo looking down on us, we had a clear view right across Belfast and beyond. This venue being cited on a hill, there was a cool breeze all day with small specks of rain in between.
It was nice to meet up with so many like minded people in the country sports fraternity. I had the pleasure of been introduced too renowned and international terrier judge Mr Robert Booth. What a gentleman he was. We had a nice conversation and he told me he loved Ireland and that he lived in County Tipperary for some time and knew the country quite well. Robert also presented Harry John Digging with a lovely Trophy set on a wooden stand for reaching out his friendship to him and to commemorate his time in Northern Ireland. What a lovely gesture.
It was a day of good will and presentations when Harry John Digging presented Peter Morgan with a lovely plaque for respect for running his shows. What better man with a lifetime of experience.
Niall O Cloghan and his sons were on site with their now very popular Terrier Maze. As the work in the field will begin shortly, It was great to see the excitement of the working terrier men when their prized terriers negotiated the Terrier Maze with speed and come out the other side to win the fastest time championship. This accolade went to Jed Donagh with PiP and Reserve to Lee Spiers with Buddy. Well done team O Cloghan.
Time passes so quickly, very soon it was Race time.

And Finally, Finally, Harry John Digging you were definitely the King of Scrabo on Sunday and in a league of your own. Along with your back up angel Gail Ross, who pulled out all the stops to make everything run so smoothly, and Sam Ross the photographer who took some lovely photographs, you brought town and country North and South of the border together for another great sporting day out.
You are a shinning light in our Country Sport traditions and for a first time show and venue, it was excellent and without contradiction.  Harry John Digging you should be proud of the work you done on Sunday. Thank you for a day full of joy and excitement and roll on 2025 for more of the same.
