Stretching The Range ? Hw 100`s.

Recommended Posts

A good THL mate pulled my leg about long range shooting today and basically said - go and try it !

I`ve never tried to shoot at range, long range, with air rifles and prided myself at getting close via hide shooting, for years, ( FWB Sport 127, .22 cal)

Well I had a very quick calibration session with my HW 100 KT .177 tonight to put my mind at rest.

I simply put two dots on a sheet of A4 paper, sat 50 yds away , placed the 38 yd zeroed cross hairs on the calibration dot and shot 4 times - it gave a perfect 1 mill dot drop on my Mamba 4-16 x 50 scope.

So I gave a 1 mill dot hold over and quickly shot approx.` 4 shots without trying at all, no concentration and in a decent breeze.

My mind has been changed lads.

What will the results be if I am "seriously calibrating" and "trying hard" ? :hmm:

From that quick muck about tonight, - F.A.C. is not required at all.

You did better than me Mark

mine were all over the place again

did not know what i was doing wrong had loads of flyers and i mean loads even at 27 yrds

then remember,d what vis(Sean) say,d the other day i had got some new jsb exacts and he say,d the head size on the pellets were different 5,51 and the other ones i used were 5,52

it likes the 5,52 thats all i could put it down to so im going to have to try and get back out this week and have another go

with the original pellets 5,52

just wasted two fecking nights because of the pellets

and i told you if you put your mind to it it can be done nice one bud

It's surprising how far you can push a good sub12 rifle, tonight I dropped a bunny stone cold at 86 yards, and although 'not everyone should be trying this at home' I am regularly pushing my own boundaries to see what the rifles are capable of, and I have a couple I feel confident on long shots (I also have a few I don't even like 30 yard shots).

Stick with it, practise builds confidence, confidence = better shooting.

My mate had the opposite problem yesterday!

he picked up some 4.52's and his 100ks wouldn't group at all but is spot on with 4.51's

who'd of thought a fraction of a mm would make that much difference :(

Here we go again :whistling:

Sorry Phil, I didn`t intend to come across like that.

Yep I am going to push my boundary to 5o yds because I know I can pull off head shots to that range with .177 and will now practice/ train to that boundary for open area shots. I`ll stick with 40yds and less for woodland etc. ( for now).

I recon my field craft must be shite mark cos 90% of my hunting shots will be over 40yrds

Anything to close is a pain cos I keep the scope set at x10

had two discs out of my back a few years back and crawling about on the decks a feckin nightmare:(

Well

There's no not a drop of wind up hear

So I've just gharged the lot up ,

And

I know that at 60 yards each one we'll take out a rabbit , with a head shot , with the right conditions

So just for a bit of fun , target,s will be set at 60 /80 /100 yards

177 pellets will be jsb 10.4

22 will faps 13 .4 with the rapid

Results will follow

This will make a nice afternoon out , and don't worry , what ever the results , on live quarry I wouldn't take any shot over 60

This may we'll be the last time I do something like this as the dark side is drawing ever closer !

And no the wolf will NOT be for sale

From my own testing I can only conclude that head size is not the factor but the actual batch itself. I have had good 5.51 tins and bad the same with 5.52 and H&N FTT in supposedly bigger head sizes.

I have some 4.52 Jsb exacts that flat out shoot in all my .177 rifles, 1/2" or less at 55 yards. I also have some AA fields in 4.51 that are 50 yard max pellets.

It just seems for me a good batch regardless of head size work in all my rifles and a bad one is bad in all. Shame I only have 3 tins of my best 4.52 exacts left.

My Hw100kt .22 on the left with Faps (5.52). R10 Super carbine .177 with JSB exact heavies (4.52) on the right.

Both on cleaned barrels after 50 to lead up. 30 yards benched indoors circle is a 5p.

That's about the best I can do but generally hold the group out to 45 yards and then it increases by about 1/8" at 50 yards.

I prefer the feel of the R10 but the Hw100 group took half the time of the R10's its a flat out shooter.

To think the same Hw100kt when new was terrible with faps and spat the odd flyer, same pellets 12 months later and it loves them maybe the barrel has seasoned a little.

Out of the 2 I think the hw100kt of the left is the better group when you consider how big a .22 pellet is anyway and the group is 14 shots vs the BSA's 10 shot mag.
