The Irish Game Fair committee is very supportive of all country sports and in particular have shown outstanding support for working terriers.

 

Contrary to what was posted earlier about the terrier ring location away from the main ring, the I.W.T.F have had a stand down in the Pavilion area for the last 4 years. For the last 2 years it was the federations choice to move the stand nearer to the terrier ring on Sunday.

 

This prime location was provided by the Game fair committee and behind the scene support was given to working terriers and lurchers that would put a lot of more established hunting organisations to shame.

 

Instead of criticising a game fair that successfully showcases field sports it might be more helpful to congratulate them for the work they do.

 

The ISPCA are an organisation that campaigns aggressively against all forms of hunting and I have little respect for them.

But it is the show organisers choice of who they invite onto their field.

Perhaps the Game fair committee is showing a progressive approach to educate these people and maybe change their stance on hunting.

It makes no difference to me as I don't go to many shows let alone participate, but the talk is a lot of folk are not happy with the goings on. Ive spoken to two different lads that were present and they said they won't be back story's that there was pictures being taken of vehicle registrations etc. Whether it's true or not I don't give a damn, the main issue is how can you run a working dog show if the men/women that work there dogs and make up the majority of the show are not going to attend, without them people there isn't any show. I don't think keeping the likes of the ISPCA happy or educating them is more important than the obvious, they're paid to do a job and will do it regardless.

The Great Game fairs OF Ireland HAVE FOR 38 YEARS BEEN PROMOTING AND DEFENDING ALL FORMS OF LEGAL HUNTING publicly, behind the scenes and politically by working with all the main countrysports organisations including the IWTF. I repeat once more why the ISPCA were there at the invitation of the Gards who were reacting to a large number of complaints about young pups and dogs in poor condition being sold at Birr. That was the sole reason they were there and NO ONE who was showing or racing a dog was hassled. In spite of a number of rumours there were NO photographs taken of dogs in the ring or car registrations etc FACT - because when challenged the two ISPCA ladies showed me the photographs they had taken at the fair. They were totally innocent and the main photos taken at the fair were in fact of the children's handling class in the main arena! - no where near the terrier & lurcher rings. The two ladies watched the finals of the FN and were complimentary about the condition of the dogs being shown.

 

I have had many messages of support ( including from a large number of terrier & lurcher owners) for the action taken against a dog dealer - the only real action taken by the iSPCA - the terrier & lurcher fraternity, the country sports community and the fairs can well do without the dreadful image of someone selling misery and perhaps potentially spreading disease. A personal question for you General - do you think the presence at any public event of this type of activity promotes country sports and the defence of legitimate terrier work? If had not been for the activities of people like him the ISPCA would have no role to play at our events.

JMO, Thanks for clarifying that we do not 'hide away' any sports at our events. In fact one of the first things we do at Birr is prepare the lurcher racing course! As I said the location of the course and rings is quite simple - it is the best piece of ground available for them at Birr and one that can offer ringside parking - very similar to the clays in the same field. As you say we welcome the IWTF to take its position on the main site with the other organisations and provide tented accommodation for them and of course finally we showcase terriers & lurchers in the main arena for the FN. No other public event gives Terriers & Lurchers as much public profile or better prizes.

 

I have no real experience of the ISPCA and I did not invite them on to the ground - the gards wished them to be there. However I found the ladies involved were not interested in anything other than the selling of dogs in poor condition and the selling of very young puppies. Both these activities do the terrier & lurcher fraternity no credit. They will not be tolerated at our events in future whether the ISPCA are there or not. As I said in advance of the show we are happy to assist genuine terrier & lurcher enthusiasts sell well reared pups through our magazine BUT not at our events.

Neil, Interesting point - I don't know anything about the ISPCA - this was my first contact with them via the Garda's request to have them there. As you say the USPCA certainly had an anti hunting agenda when they seized some dogs which they had to return in a case I was involved in as a witness for the owner. At Birr the agreed objective of the Garda, ISPCA and ourselves was to address public concern and complaints about very young puppies and dogs in poor condition being sold at Birr. That was the agreed 'agenda' and nothing more and I felt the ISPCA stuck to this.

No need to apologise Albert, it's a hunting forum after all and you haven't offended me in anyway, I hope likewise, healthy discussion never done any harm, only good. Neil's made a good point there about the ISPCA, I never referred to them as the same as the USPCA in the North yet my initial post was, if they were anything like the USPCA in the north I wouldn't give them the time of day. Like all charity organisations the ISPCA is driven by money.

In that respect they will try to be all things to all people.....as long as you hand over your cash.

 

The dangerous aspect is that the people at the top table are Anti-hunting.

Having met a few of them in the past they are very extreme in their views on field sports and their policy confirms that.

 

As usual some of the men and women in the front line of the ISPCA are probably genuine in their respect for animals.

It might be a good idea to make contact with the front line people and show them a new side of hunting folk.

 

The game fairs is a great place to do just that in my opinion.

Not trying to hijack your post and I have only respect for the work you and your committee do for hunting.

But the thought of the ISPCA around field sports does raise some concerns in my mind.

 

Definitely cannot please all of the people all of the time
