Why Aren't Gundog Lurchers Popular?

Recommended Posts

maybe because they are sh!te ?? chances are they have been tried and sacked off, if they were any good they would be popular

Sweeping statement socks, why are they shit?

Surely if they were of much use they would be more popular?

Let's have it right every cross under the sun has been tried at some point. The good stuff tends to stick around and the not so good stuff tends to fade away.

Disagree with both above posts. And I'm not not getting into a debate on bull x's. Ok, some of the racy ones can be pretty useful, but 90% of them are shockingly shite, bred from shockingly shite parents etc, look how popular they are?

Ok I will stop being a tit for a second ... What would a gun dog bring to the table that isn't already available ??? Not a lot .... They hunt primararly by scent a hound does that better ... Their soft mouthed ... ok if your only after rabbits ... Great in water ... You don't catch many rabbits in the river ... Easy to train ... So are collies ... Extra speed no ... Extra stamina no ... Good feet no ... Anything they can add conformation wise no ... Lots of inbreeding problems with hips etc ... A decent coat yes ... For me there is nothing they bring to the table that isn't already there .......

Socks, not all gundogs are soft mouthed all of the time, and some not even soft mouthed at all. And a lab on an estate I worked on years ago, would kill foxes that he caught quicker than almost every fox killing lurcher I've seen, and he wasn't a one of. And seen plenty of rabbit, and bird crunchers of all types of gundog over the years.

Mik, nose ,retrieve ,soft mouth good feet and good coat also quite biddable.

You don't need that good a nose for most lurcher work ,most lurcher are easy to train to retrieve I have a pup that my nine year old son taught to retrieve at 10 weeks ,all my lurchers will retrieve rabbits live to hand , they have better feet that any gun dog I have seen ,...there is nothing a lab or a spaniel can bring to the mix and I have been around gun dogs since I was a kid ...but then it depends if you just want a mediocre lurcher

Mik, gwp's are gundogs, as you obviously know, aren't many of them supposed to be good fox dogs, and also really good working dogs in general. The other day half this site was raving how useful they'd be put to a greyhound.

Because they don't sell. If some folk thought they could easily shift litters of them, they could be as popular as many other x's.

Nail on the head

I genuinely don't know why gundog lurchers aren't more popular. I like collie crosses, but as lurcher work goes ( in the true sense of the word) I would think gundog breeds would be up there along si

Socks wants a gundog X whippet ?

Yes pal I read it tried to get my uncle to write in but hes not really an extrovert to be honest! But all the things Hancock said ring true to be fair this cross has been around and a few people use i

Absolutely agree. I think the best type out there would be the German Wire haired pointer to make a good all round lurcher but there is no unique pull from adding this blood the collie already brings all of it to the table and you have a higher chance of a collie cross doing the job because we have so many example of good collie crossing doing everything needed - so why take the gamble?

I would take a punt at a gwp X grey !

seen a couple and they weren't that good. Not as quick as the collie lurchers on the day, and not as brave... Good hunters though in woodland and fellside
I'd have to see the parents working first like ! This foxhound X bull grey is suiting my needs at the moment great hunter and plenty of guts ! Never be a lamping dog which doesn't bother me
