I genuinely don't know why gundog lurchers aren't more popular. I like collie crosses, but as lurcher work goes ( in the true sense of the word) I would think gundog breeds would be up there along si

I would take a punt at a gwp X grey !

seen a couple and they weren't that good. Not as quick as the collie lurchers on the day, and not as brave... Good hunters though in woodland and fellside
I'd have to see the parents working first like ! This foxhound X bull grey is suiting my needs at the moment great hunter and plenty of guts ! Never be a lamping dog which doesn't bother me

Go for a fell hound or trail hound for a lamping dog! Much leaner than a normal foxhound. When you list the things a hound brings to lurcher lines it amazes me that they are not a popular cross but I must admit I wouldn't want too many knobs getting into hound crosses lol
I'm very lucky as I can keep a few lurchers the dog im taking about will never see the lamp he has no need but u agree he brings a lot to the table lurcher wise he feets are great ! Stamina is unreal literally doesn't stop all day ! He's a nice dog to have around not everyone cup of tea but he's a massive part of my hunting and couldn't be with out the big b*****d now

Yes pal I have a fell hound lurcher and I have seen the hound crosses on the lamp in short the hound cross brings amazing stamina, great drive and feet they are solid dogs built to work the British countryside and another thing the fell hounds are controlled by voice so they can't be too daft either!

I suppose that is everything a gundog could bring but in a running frame. What about voice though?

none have made a peep mate would never of bred out of the origional if it yapped your right maybe a gundog could bring that to the table but there isn't a gundog in the world that could keep with a fell hound at work and I'm not knocking gun dogs they have good qualities pal. I think gundogs could offer a bit of refinement to some lurchers with manners and solid retrieval....but there not really proven on all game.

Ive never bred a lurcher using gundog or hound, but I think if I was going to try it I would chance the fell hound over gundog for those reasons you have given. I think you should deffo write an article for the C/W or at least a letter to reply to D.Hancock

This is the bitch I'll be running this season the 3/4 has sired before a few years back and I've heard the dogs have done well but my uncle doesn't get out nearly as much as he used to but liked the look of a dog local to him it was a sal/collie/whip/grey so he lined the two, he offered me a pup and I took one. To be honest I am looking for a hound x to line to my bitch one day if she does the business to bring back the influence.

The 3/4 made a very smart dog and I would love something similar, I can see why people say it but yapping has never been in the line at all and people always mention day time hunting and the nose, but these dogs are bred to take all game on lamp and daytime long ears and that's it.

Thanks for reading pal

I've spent many enjoyable days out with hounds, around 60 packs all over Britain but mostly with fell hounds. Many hounds won't take a fox single handed and the ones that do are often bred out of stock that did. So I'm assuming a lot of thought goes into picking the hound blood in a lurcher mix. I'd like to see a hound cross, hounds have the best noses so they could be my ideal lurcher cross but as we all know theres more to putting game in the bag than just nose and stamina.

I can't tell you about how to choose hounds to breed from but I have see a F1 dragged across a field by a large fallow doe and the dog cling hold and over power power it and found a massive gauge on the inside of the dogs quarter and it didn't flinch, and I've see it destroy charlie many a time, and give it it's all every run working to heal and retrieve very well thats all i can say for the cross. I find it funny when you hear lads saying that they own labs and spaniels that kill foxes ...I had a lad say that many years ago and I give him the oppertunity to show me ...lets just say the dog didn't want to know and if a dog of that type was to catch old Charlie it would of been a very poor specimen for the dog to catch it in the first place

Sounds good. I've not bothered with deer and only bumped into the odd fox. Rats and rabbits were my quarry. Have you taken your dog onto the fells? I'd imagine that's where it would show its nose to the

Maybe a 3/4 whippet 1/4 spaniel might turn out ok for stuff like that.

good point old reynard has a way of disapearing - even with a well bred flying machine after him.

The gwp cross is the dog for me, I wouldn't have kept them for so long otherwise.

Depends on the ground cover, the gwp x will be taller so can fly over taller cover better and also not be unsighted on day time quarry,

A cocker x ,or small springer x,I would thought may struggle in tall set aside or on high ground up country ,

I await the angry replies from spaniel Lurcher owners lol
