straight2hand 303
Sounds good. I've not bothered with deer and only bumped into the odd fox. Rats and rabbits were my quarry. Have you taken your dog onto the fells? I'd imagine that's where it would show its nose to theMaybe a 3/4 whippet 1/4 spaniel might turn out ok for stuff like that. The gwp cross is the dog for me, I wouldn't have kept them for so long otherwise. I definitely think out of all the gun dog breeds that is the best breed suited to produce solid lurchers. pointer 543
Tess waiting for a bolt on the first day she was taken out with a ferret. ( January 2005 ). She would usually wait like that for as long as it took only moving if she thought the rabbit would bolt from another hole. Now ferreting isn't my preferred type of hunting whether that's out with lurchers or hawks but it's sometimes necessary to get the runs or flights. I suppose it's to be expected that a lurcher bred from something which will hold a point for long periods if necessary will have a good attention span. They need it too, get it wrong and the rabbit might see the dog and then it can all go wrong. I hate digging out rabbits or losing time messing around. (I get ridiculously annoyed if a lurcher rushes in and doesn't take a rabbit in the seat if I feel it should have been lol). I don't like debates about the best crosses and all that stuff as it usually turns nasty or just plain mental. I can appreciate any good working dog of any kind........I just like GWP's. 3 Quote Link to post

arcticgun 4,548
words too describe Alfie enthusiasm and relentless the dog simply never stops cover miles of land and finds what other dogs pass n miss, seen him inside a bush he bigger than n come out with rabbit,?also seen him sat still in middle of nowhere whilst hawk was being located dog ignored Lurcher running hare near it ? He then went onto work with a hawk that did not like it but dogs hacked it all Alfie been a Lurcher, terrier, falconry dog, flusher, pointer not bad for a pure bred GWP Tess I've written about in these types of threads, she truly one of the very best Lurchers I've seen, daytime she something else, pointer right in what he says she will be missed them types don't come again but like I said too pointer she one of the first it's not like there loads of them, likesay when I'm done with what I do now that's what I would have next jack of all trades Edited August 26, 2016 by arcticgun 3 Quote Link to post
pointer 543
I think because Tess looked so much like a GWP the other blood in her was often ignored by myself and others that saw her. I believe the fact she was out of Casper and all that goes with that line of coursing dog played a huge part in how she turned out. To say she is a pointer cross isn't the full story.
