tote 854
Tote... How big is the Merle bitch with the pup's ??? Must of been abit of an awkward mateing knowing the size / weight of some coursing greyhound's The bitch was small breeze,19"-20". But where there's a will there's a way. Quote Link to post
tote 854
How did the pups throw Tote? With the bitch being 7/8 collie I would imagine putting a greyhound over her would make the pups very much like a first cross? Or were they much racier with that extra little bit of greyhound? I have never tried 7/8 either way as I think 3/4 greyhound is enough on the speed side and 3/4 collie is more than enough collie, any more and you might as well just work a pure so I would be interested to see how the pups turned out I'll try and find some pics of the dogs in the litter SJM,I'll get back to you. tote 854
SJM the bitch had 4 dogs and 1 bitch, the bitch[black] went south and that was the last I heard of her.The 4 dogs all stayed fairly local. They varied from 24" to 26 1/2". The black and white dog went to a lad that came out lamping with me and the brother in law.Well you know how it is,he thought it was great and had his heart set on a pup needless to say it ended up as a family pet. Blue the biggest pup was my nephews pick,he would have made a decent dog I'm sure but never got the work load he required Blue at 10 months,he was the biggest in the litter at 26 1/2". Striker,is still in Dumfries and the lad that has him is "over the moon with him" he has taken everything with the dog Probably as near an all rounder as you'll get. Striker, about 25". I kept the merle pup Monty,he was the smallest dog in the litter at 24".He was easily the most biddable dog I've had,for me he threw more to the mothers side.As a lamper he would have took some beating,he wasn't the fastest but he quickly worked out the ins and outs of lamping and he definatley had the stamina from his dam. He must have caught 70 rabbits or thereabouts, and ran a lot more, then out of the blue he started opening up It wasn't long after that that I gave him away to my mate. As try as I might opening up is one of the things I just can't tollerate in a lurcher. Monty. To sum up the litter was similair to a first cross mating, some throwing more to the collie dam and vice versa. Quote Link to post

breeze 1,308
Tote... Nice looking animal's from that resulting litter mate, to look at them you wouldn't think they were all litter mate's. Shame to hear about the Monty dog going that way, but got to admit it's one of my pet hate's in a lurcher aswell Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Merle is not naturally occuring in chihuahuas, spaniels, poms, poodles etc, its a common thing in America to breed merle into the toy breeds, usually via a merle daschund or a small merle collie, then the idiots try to say it has "always been in the breed" when its obvious its suddenly appeared from somewhere The breeds where it is naturally occuring are mostly herding breeds, collies, border, rough, smooth, shetland sheepdog, australian shepherd and beauceron. The great dane and daschund are the only 2 non herding breeds I can think of off the top of my head that carry it naturally without the addition of other breeds. The pitbull has merle lines but these are attributed to crossbreeding, most likely with Catahoula Leopard dogs which trace their merle ancestry back to the beauceron. Merle is a very interesting gene thats for sure Quote Link to post
Scallywag 78
I think you can get merle corgies too? Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Yep, thats right in the cardigan but not the pembroke, they are classed as a herding, or pastoral breed Quote Link to post

Guest SJM
Theres big money in those merle chihuahuas Theres a woman up here whos imported some from America and is now breeding them, she had some advertised at 2 grand and thats obviously with no UK KC reg, as I dont think the UK would recognise the colour as being genuine to the breed.
