I do use collars but I also like to take my time like you say and let the ferrets work and do their thing. Sit back on the ferret box and take it all in.

 

I have ferreted with lads on paid jobs or on permissions where the aim is to get big numbers and some of them lads are the opposite. Big hobs with the intention of digging. Ferret in and spade out. Loads of digging on days like that, hard work but it is productive. Each to their own and different circumstances.

 

But if it's a leisurely morning ferreting where numbers aren't the aim then I'm the same as you.

I’ve lost 3 ferrets in over40 years and I suspect 2 of those were to snakes, I do own a ferret finder and only use them on long lay ups. I have one ferret that will stay with the rabbits, if I get stuck I enter him with a collar. In spring and summer here, you can’t dig the ground unless you have a large crow bar or a jack hammer so pretty much useless anyway. To answer your question In this country the answer is NO

Even if you rarely dig, it's nice having the peace of mind that the ferret is still there and hasn't sloped off further up the hedgerow without you noticing.

digging is just part of the day, you sit on your box for a hour or more, or dig, little jill,s big hobs, you will get the same out come

About 20 mins max I reckon, then I can't help myself. The locator is out. As mentioned on here before, we tried for ages to find the hob on the side of a railway bank without any success. My mate was getting stressed at losing his first ever ferret. T he little shit was about 100yds along the track doing his ferret dance. Good job we looked further than a locator box. What I'm saying is that there are occasions when the box just does not cut it. Would I go without a box? Absolutely not.

It works the other way too.

 

In the corner of one of our fields at home, on the roadside rather than the field side, there is an underground bt cabinet. It sends locators mental and you get 18" reads over a 4 or 5m square area.

Just a cause of knowing your ferret time wise which ferrets no showing ,ah shes on its no going to bolt get the box out . But as said some folk drop a ferret in then reach for the spade

I always take the locator and always collar up the ferrets, not because I like to dig, but from time to time ferrets do go awal. Last time I got the locator out, and I only get it out when I have to, the jill was trapped in a stop end behind two dead rabbits, and no way was she coming out that day with out a bit of shovel work.
