Decided I'm going to aim for a 5lb chub from my local river this year. Had a couple of sessions just roving with breadflake and found a few decent spots (overhanging willows) that have produced a few

some of those little streams you can run and jump across hold some good fish.must of spent 8 seasons trying to get a 7 pounder lol-one day hopefully. Had probably 50 over the 5 mark and 15 at 6 plus.a

When the old staythorpe power station was running beside the trent the river was full to the brim of chub somthing to do with the warm water from the station i believe. ..I've had 100lbs plus bags on

Yes mate caught when fishing for barbel-ignoring the bites lol.caught on double pellet or mainline bollies.best bait on the wye for chub has to be maggots/bread in the feeder and big bunch on the hook/chunk of bread flake.not impossible to get 100/150 lb bags-my mate had 280 lb in a 4hr match few years back'nothing really under 3/4 lb.atb dc

Well folks I covered a 5km stretch of the Aire yesterday without anything substantial. Must have dropped into 15 or so swims with breadflake, one swim produced several small chub upto about 6oz, if the bait was sat longer than a couple of minutes it was mullered by crays. It was good to catch the target species but the big fish are seemingly on holiday. I don't think the bright light helped, I spooked a couple of decent fish with my shadow, probably would have come into it's own near sunset but I didn't have the time.

I was atleast happy that I managed to avoid the trout, starting to build up a decent picture of where to likely find the chub- the best spots have been the deeper, slower pools with big low lying willows and an undercut bank.

I'll be trying a spot this week above a weir, a very deep and slow water- not what I'm used to but it has some nice snaggy swims and I get the feeling it will hold a better head of coarse fish than the usual fast and shallow sections.

Nice one Kanny, that sounds mint. They are cracking chub!

Just returned home from a short session, at the deeper slower spot, above the weir. Fished the stick float and centrepin, with breadflake and breadmash. Suprise suprise Mr trout turned up, as did a smallish grayling, which I thought was quite surprising. Minnows started destroying the swim as did the ducks. I was expecting more in the way of coarse fish, roach in particular. I might just have to wait until we are a few frosts in when hopefully the minnows have buggered off to try with maggot/caster etc. Ey well got to be in it to win it.

I swear by lob worms for chub they seem to be underrated nowdays also its the perfect time of year to collect some wasp nests chub love a bit of wasp cake also if there's any elderberry overhanging the water try couple of berries on your hook and fish round the elder tree....there ain't much a chub won't take I've had them on frogletts to bumblebees when I was a kid although I couldn't condone the use of such baits now but seasonal can prevail where other baits fail  Edited by kanny

I've been thinking about giving lobs a go. I really don't mind the odd perch either! But the trout love them. I'll give them a go though! I've heard about the wasp thing, never tried it but if anyone is willing to donate some feel free haha.

In all fairness I saw a couple of pike at the deep spot and I've never had a river pike before...
