Guest MyDogsAGuire
DAWN why is 5 years old not exactly ideal? If it was a lurcher or terrier it wouldnt have been bred till then anyway I have a patterdale pup her off a 6 year old bitch and a 10 year old dog, both dogs first time being bred
Dawn B 212
IMO and I think you'll find in most vets opinion, its too old. In comparitive terms, a 6yr old bitch would be about 50yrs old in human terms, as I said NOT ideal. I am not one to advocate using young animals to breed, perhaps about 3 and a half for a first litter, giving ample time, about 2 seasons to see if you are happy with the way the dog works. Many will like more seasons under their belt, I too appreciate that, but for bitches they are the ones that need to be fit, healthy and in their prime, your male, any male of any age, (say your 10yr old) is fine, he has the mating to think about and thats it! Guest oldskool
before my time my grandad owned a collie bitch that was served every year with every stray in town... i think the last litter was at 13... she lived on till 15 with no ill effect... and this was a farm dog, to be fair, my grandad wrongly let her take shelter where ever she could get her head in all weathers... my oldest terrier was about 12 when she came in heat and got unknowingly caught with a different collie i think she died at 18 or so... i think when they stop comin into heat properly then its their bodys way of telling them they have had enough... nature knows best and all that jazz

Nobody got attcked, dogs were not a problem and dogs ate whatever you gave them! They lived long lives and were very rarely ill! What went wrong?

Strange one?? I believe the increase in vehicle traffic has alot to do with it and dog theft. Owners keep there dogs inside and are fearful of other dogs. The dogs become very unsocialised, and also dont build strong immunities.
