witton 6
We see a lot of posts asking for peoples opinions on the best mix for an allrounder but who actually owns and works one?...Not just owns a dog capable of catching a bit of everything but a dog that is out doing it on a regular basis?....well was before the ban All rounder can mean many different things to different people. Some say the dog should do everything from ferreting to lamping all game to working up... and daytime hare and deer....ect. Basically a master at everything that a lurcher can be used for. But others think as long as it can catch abit of everything on the lamp then it is an allrounder......I will never own a true all rounder....simply because there are certain aspects of lurcher work that don't really interest me so my dogs will never really be used for......for me a i would be happy with a dog that i could go lamping with and slip it on anything that popped up and the dog would be capable to do the job.....and also be able to take out in the day and the dog would be able to bag its fair share of anything it put up.....................Anyway back to the question, who actually owns a dog that is bagging everything on the lamp? Well WAS BEFORE THE BAN ie rabbit, hare, fox, pigs, muntys, roe, fallow, cwd......Get some pics up and the breeding Looking forward to reading the reply's and seeing some pics of good allround lamp dogs. Guest FOXDOG
This Dog will take everything you mentioned day or night BUT he is not a Daytime hare dog in any sense of the word although he can put a few in the bag in smallish fields as hes a fast dog. Hes only done Fallow out of the deer you mentioned and although hes 2 years this months has only had 7. Hes a very good rabbit dog and has caught 20 + rabbits on more than one occasion BUT again theres a fault in he doesnt retrieve. Hes not a ferreting dog, he will kill ferrets if given a chance and will plough through nets. He is main job is foxes, hes had 26 single handed so far which in my eyes aint bad, including a few weeks ago when he did 7 in one week BUT again there is something, sometimes he may go 3 weeks without a fox as I just cant get him on one. So he wouldnt get as many as some lads dogs are getting. I want a dog that will take EVERYTHING on the lamp but if it wont kill a fox I wont keep it, Im only in the lurcher game 2 years but that adrenaline rush when a dog is up a foxes arse is something special and you need a dog with abit of balls to do it regular. Anyway the point of my post was that although this dog takes everything hes really only a good lamping dog. Not an allrounder due to the points Ive mentioned. He has his Bad points too and Im sure some folks wouldnt keep him but hey once your happy with your dog mate thats all that matters, your only a young lad dont let people fill your head with shit like mine was when I was your age starting out digging. witton 6
Thanks for taking the time to reply mate Thats a very nice looking dog And thats a very nice tally you have got going on fox and fallow especially for the dogs age All i do is lamp work really, so pre ban as long as the dog could bag fox, hares, rabbit and hopefully a thew deer on the lamp then id be very very happy I don't think there will ever be a true allrounder, well not a dog that is 100% specialized at every aspect of lurcher work. Its a thing of myth.....and in this day and age i cant see there being many people willing to put the amount of time and effort it to achieving it, I think a dog like that would be 1 in a million. It wouldn't just be the result of hard work and time but also a lot of luck. Witton Quote Link to post
Royston2 0
Allrounder??????? So many different views on this it is untrue.... I have a 19" beddy grey bitch and since her pups where born in may i have taken out a lad and been doing a few bits and bobs and there aint nothing he hasn`t seen his pups mum have her mouth around with in reason like feck.... So is she an allrounder answer is who knows i would say she is then the other side of me would so no way far from it..Depends on what way you look at it i think.. Interesting thread hope it stays normal...I cant wait to hear about the wonder dogs out there i love that..... Normality is creeping away already with that comment lol lol Quote Link to post
Rabbit Hunter 6,613
good post witton...i have a saluki/greyhound that will tackle most things on the lamp and has the speed and stamina to do so....however i'm gonna try a bull/grey for my next lurcher as i like their determination...
