Like mark has said...   Have a little think before dishing the beans out. You'll be lured into thinking your a half decent shot if you jump straight on the PCP route   All the best with it though

Spring guns are cheaper but take more skill to use!

Ok, there's a few things to consider......

Buying new or used: you get a warranty with a new rifle but, used will be cheaper and may come with a scope.

A springer will generally be less costly but, they do recoil so they take some practice to shoot accurately.

They are more simple and, I think, more fun to use.

A PCP will usually be more expensive, especially when you've added the dive bottle or pump. They are a lot easier to shoot accurately as there is no recoil. Also, there are a lot of multishot rifles available which is always a bonus when hunting.

Then, of course, you get the good ol' calibre debate - .177, .20, .22 or .25.

Personally, I use a .177 pcp for hunting with a heavy 10.34gn pellet.

This calibre has the flatest trajectory and, the pellet retains energy well.

I use it for everything - rabbits, rats, birds.

The larger the caliber, the more loopy the trajectory, the better your range finding needs to be.

I also have a .22 springer. It's a lot of fun to use but, as I said, it does recoil so, I'm learning it's hold and practicing my accuracy before I hunt with it.

My advice would be to buy right first time from the makers that are known for quality. I like Air Arms, Weihrauch, Some BSAs. Walther LGV & LGU are getting good press.

Of course, you also have to ensure that a rifle fits you. It may sound daft but, if it doesn't naturally come to the shoulder well, it's another variable that will effect your accuracy.

Try to try a few a local shops and gun clubs first. The lads in this sport are generally a helpful, welcoming bunch - most will be happy to help.

Do your own research as well - there's loads of good reviews on the various forums and YouTube.

An expensive rifle isn't always the best rifle and, a cheap rifle isn't always crap.

Other advice I'd give is practice, practice and practice some more with whatever kit you decide on and, buy a rangefinder and a chrono (to keep an eye on your rifles power).

Most of all - Enjoy the search. There's nothing like the feeling of a new rifle.

Nice little 99/Hawke combo would suit you down to a tea and it'll bang the lights out of all the quarry you highlight.
