skycat 6,173
It won't affect the dog's running itself, but as there is no stopper to protect the back of the leg when the dog is running hard the place where it used to be can risk injury: lots of tendons and ligaments there. Just look at photos of the extreme flexion in the front leg when the paw hits the ground and the leg bends to absorb the shock of the impact. I've seen those stopper protectors in action out coursing, and the ones which do up with velcro straps are useless for a working dog, for they aren't stretchy enough to be tight enough to stop muck getting between the protector and the skin. Which results in very sore legs. A friend of mine used to tape a small piece of sponge to the place where the stopper had been, and then wrap the whole leg in Vet Wrap, and fix that in place with Elastoplast tape. A time-consuming business, but worth it if you want the dog to run all day or night on all sorts of ground. Those protectors you buy might be fine for a little canter around on a playing field, but they aren't suitable for a hard-working lurcher. 3 Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
I’ve used Vet wrap in the past to protect stoppers etc, a modern alternative might be leucotape / kinetic tape for those not near a horse supply place. 3 Quote Link to post
DEERMAN 1,018
Duck tape tucked back on its self ,so no sticky part on stopper with smear of Vics nose stuff on tape stop the dog from pulling it off, does the job just as good as anything 2 Quote Link to post
