trigger2 3,146
had a visit from a mate tonight as again the weather was forecast a little rain in my area so i decided it might be another opertunity to try the pup. unfortanatly tonight the forecast was wrong and the rain never came in as promised, but i still decided to just pop out and have a look about after driving a while i finally decided to head to the spot where i had last been sucsessfull with my young pup and try a couple of runs. first field we got over the gate and as i put the light on the pup was allready giving chase to a rabbit he had some how come across in the dark. it was a nice little course with the pup coming close to picking it up a couple of times, he eventually lost the rabbit on the turn and as luck happened it ran back towards us and squat a few feet away from my mate the lamp was kept on and the pup called over he noticed and bang first rabbit in the bag out of its squat lol. with the first rabbit in the bag a quick shine another rabbit so i sent the pup again as i new we were stood in the right position, the pup went down the beam and gave chase this time losing the rabbit as it went just out of the beam because of a slight brow in the field, again this rabbit headed back towards us and squat, i got the pup back and started to walk him up he spotted the rabbit a good distance away he went and bang hit the rabbit out the squat only to release it, after giving chase it was finally rabbit number 2 in the bag. we had a couple more runs with no success so i decided to call it a night. 1 rabbit was only half grown but i lost it whilst walking so i used another rabbit the other dog had caught for this pick. thanks for looking 8 Quote Link to post

Phil Lloyd 10,738
Well done Trigger and Pup.. Personally,...I would now,..let sleeping dogs lie,...just for a while.... You have seen what you wanted to see and now, know the score,... I think we all like to have that bit of confidence in a new lurcher confirmed,. Its nice to put that knowledge in your back pocket and often breath a sigh of relief.. I am one of the worst for starting dogs/ferrets young,...it is as though I need to know if our lives together , actually have a future ! Life is too short for me to maintain a kennel of critters, that do not think the same way as myself,.so,.as stated,..I just like to know ...I also hate folk telling a fellow lurcher man, what he must or must not do,...feck that... But,..with a big ole jukel that has shown some talent,...I then usually hang back,..just for a while... All the best, Phil.. Edited August 8, 2016 by Phil Lloyd 11 Quote Link to post

Plucky1 1,119
Well done pup....I would still keep my fingers crossed .. I would keep the pup on them little and often ... If it anit hearting him now whats the point in stoping atb too many runs in a young dog can pile on too much muscle in the back legs twisting them out of shape making them cow hocked, it can also enlarge the heart with the lungs being pushed too early, like a lot of young dogs they can be finished at a very early age, let the pup mature a bit and you will get the years out of it barring accidents, I learnt the hard way losing a top bitch aged only 3 and Half, WM Quote Link to post

trigger2 3,146
Well done mate you certainly giving him head start he be mopping them up in a few months atb Flacko hes getting a little bit of experience put into his young head, i now know hes ready for the odd few nights out on his own for a few runs this season weather permitting. gaz. the pup didnt yap once but only time can tell, my other 2 dogs dont yap and never have. phil Lloyd. i am planning on taking it a little easier on him of a night now i know its all clicked, but there is alot more fine tunning to do with all those other hunting related stuff he needs to learn. fences, getting in and out of the motor straight away etc etc. plenty of long day walks and stamina building is my plan over the next few weeks, unless i get one of those nights weather wise i just cant refuse. thanks for your comments everybody else. 3 Quote Link to post
