Fox Dogs/all Rounders

Recommended Posts

Depends on what the owner wants from the pups .

Should any lurcher with bull or wheaten or breeds that are expected to take sharp game, be bred from if they don't take fox? Depends on the owner

if a heavy blooded bull x don't take fox its a cur and should never be bred from simple as in my books , if it has 5 other breeds in it its just a scatter bred cur and for what i like same applies

Fox dogs come in all shapes and sizes so do all rounders ! My old bitch is heavy but by f**k she can run ! you will get whippets that will kill foxes and 28 inch Bullx that will bark at them it's not

For what it's worth bull types Wheaton types that dither around Charlie need culling simples for flecks sake we talking animas bred for teeth better other types for edible .atb bunnys.

Some of the best catch dogs Iv seen have been lighter more nimble types, Diffrent dogs have different styles so wait for a strike other grab any where.. Most just expect them to take them like a half x bull gh anything other that no good lacks heart ect the fast killer I ever seen was a 29" deerhound/gh type one bite across the back shoulders and dropped dead fox as quick as that, say do would always wait for same strike and hated taking any form of stick back missed more than he took and after a few started just running them, best maybe a sal/gh/whip type never seen one till he was about 2 and half and just went from strength to strength great alround catch dog and quick finisher, then another little bitch that sticks in my is a sal/bull/gh decent bitch another good catch type and and a great knack as a chest killer. They've never been my thing and most if not all mine where never proper fox takers

I'd agree to a point but what if fox. Ain't your quarry? and you have one of the said breeds that does well on everything that you take? Is it a cull ? What if it was a wheaten Saluki grey beddy whippet (for instance) does that still hold true?

Roy that's fine in my eyes, you've a dog that suits you on all quarry you want why can't you then breed of it... It's been honest and if a lads shows an intrest in say a pup you just tell him they ain't single handed dogs on the said quarry and truthful, mate of mine has a weaton/bull/gh x beddy/gh/whip type thing strongish bitch 24"/25" to look at her you'd think no problem but she won't got bit and come back screaming, but my mates happy with her for everything else and he's taking taking litter of her next spring cause she ticks the boxes for him and to me their nothing wrong with that imo

OK ...probably not the best example mate.

Let's say you have a lurcher with a lump of bull or wheaten in there and it took all game well except fox ,would it be worthy of breeding from ?

I personally wouldn't want to try it ,but I can see why others would that was my point.

All depends on the owners standards! If you have a dog bred to take everything and it doesn't could you live with it? Could you put up with a dog that didn't retrieve or couldn't jump? For me if the dog didn't like charlie but it excelled in other areas you might still work it but I wouldn't be interested in breeding from it. For me to breed from a dog it would have to be consistently doing what you want it to do because (excuse the pun) it could bite you the arse later on.

Right lads bear with me, what was the best fox dog you saw? Which way bred & type? (Racy, heavy etc?)

There were a few dogs that did all quarry, but for some reason danced around a fox, makes no sence, what was the best fox dog you saw that would do all quarry also? I've seen a lot of dogs run, & always compare them to my old bitch who was 3/8 5/8 bull grey x grey. Exceptional on fox, also a very good friend had a super racy bullxgrey x wheatenxgrey that would catch 90% of the foxes she was slipped on, very fast bitch, round here the fields aren't big & they're never in the middle so you need a good turn of pace, all pre ban reminiscing

if i owned a genuine Allrounder that swivelled away from fox id not be that bothered, the mutt would be a easier to feed. The best fox dogs ive seen never had Bull and Wheaton in the mix.I don,t like to see a dog cast a lazy eye over a fox,id breed from a dog that cared little for Charlie,id not breed from a dog that could not fill a freezer.
