I'd like to see a 5 month old Lurcher catch a rabbit where I go lamping, but it will be interesting to see what the pup is doing in 2 years time, not having ago but just curious

Lads said the same about my brindle bitch 3 years ago mate. I fell out with lads on here who said she would be ruined. And I'm sure they said the same about triggers older dog 6 years ago and he's still doing the job now.

 

That's what I'm getting at. We keep hearing this "they will be knackered (joint wise) in years to come" but we never hear of this happening.

 

I can see the mental side of things. Over matching and yapping etc but I aren't buying this joint thing from running a couple of summer rabbits.

Don't think you'd be slipping a young dog on a running winter rabbit in a massive arable field.

But walking up to a green squatter in a grass paddock, and slipping on a kick up??

Stack it all in the dogs favour and I can't see the harm personally

People tend to be set in their beliefs on this subject so I don't see the point of argueing about it but I will say that I personally like to give as much good experience in the field as possible from as early an age as the pup can cope with it (physically and mentally).

As Socks say's it varies from pup to pup.

 

 

 

The pup in the photos was out and about from a pretty young age, learning and getting keen, ferreting and lamping, and is still running sound over some v. rough ground now at the age of seven.

Mine hurt him self at 7 months just a freak accident but it taught me what damage they do if they are go for gold merchants.

Its very tempting mind to get a couple under the belt but now the pup has done that I would keep him safe till end of the season as far as lamping goes. That is just what I learnt my self anyway. Nice looking pup you are going to have some fun in the future What cross is he trigger ?

its coming along nicely the pup has shown me he is capable of doing what i have asked from him, so now its just time and trying to get out in the field at the right time weather wise and give him the best opertunity i can when i can. the pup come home a winner in his head lastnight. our bond should just get stronger and stronger.

I ain't getting into the slagging match. I personally wouldn't do it.

I have a pup roughly same age nearly 19 weeks old, I just can't see mine catching a rabbit, and your pup looks heavier built too. Can't get over it caught lol

How come you're still dummy training terry? Does he not retrieve when he catches or you just trying to keep on top of it?

My two have been up the dale and up the moor every day from 3 month old go to teach them field craft no good being shut in a pen just don't push them too hard and most importantly just let them be pups. Mine are nearly 11 month old now, looking forward to the new season atb Fourtrak

How come you're still dummy training terry? Does he not retrieve when he catches or you just trying to keep on top of it?

 

 

 

Not yet Gaz so I have spent the summer when we get back from our morning walk popping the dummy in his chops and getting him to follow me with it and hand it over. He has that sussed now so this coming season I hope to use that little lesson to my advantage. Not a deal breaker or any thing but I enjoy it

Well done Trigg and pup..

you know your dogs and only you know when its right or not.

 

mine was out from 10 weeks old and has never stopped since..she had a few early solo lampin sessions and ferreting with no nets all before she was 6 months old.. she was retrieving the older dogs catches from about 4 months old.. caught her 1st marked up warren and bolted rabbit at 5months old.. . . they learn nowt in the kennel. . she is now a very solid dependable laid back moocher with no stress in her for anything or anybody.. a great partner in the field who knows her job and loves it.
