billhardy 2,342
trigger is welsh but he is talking a little bit of sense if a pup can't stick walking through a little bit of shit when there 8 weeks old they aint worth keeping ,before you knock it try it. Try what running pups? before the joints have jelled. Opinions we all have one but here we are a lurcher xs malli a million miles from the fast up and at um types or saturated long dog ,there's those that no hounds and those that know knock about robust types and these in all and most cases knock the resells about more down the river.playing .diving in and out,so here we have it the dark destroyer knocking a few over atb bunnys. 3 Quote Link to post

bird 9,872
Well done Trigger...i know that it was always your plan to start Big Ben young and I'm really glad it's payed off for you mate, This isn't a young lad who know's feck all about dogs but a lad who's been very successful using this method on his other dogs. I remember many years ago a guy ( Paul Ford I think) wrote in the Shooting News about doing the same kind of entering...he also got shot to pieces. I've never entered a dog to lamping at such an early age but always get them out ferreting within the first few months... Each to their own...if it works for you mate keep at it... ATB postie trigg said your pup very similar size to his pup , and both being brothers , i reckon he catch a daft rabbit for you now. Buck was the same age as his pup, and caught them quite easy, and at that age was bigger type pup . Buck never had a prob on rabbits, caught few soft summer rabbits , comes nove-dec when they are more lamp shy, he knew how to deal with them and got some good bags and he was about 10-11 month old then, so it deff helped him having a little go on few summer rabbits, and like said on the post 37 was his best, but had loads of mid 20s regular, and thats very good for a dog not really bred for rabbits 1 Quote Link to post

whitefeet4190 1,725
5 months ??? Wtf, what do you think the pup is gaining from running at that age ? Apart from f***ing it's joints up that are far from developed, I can't believe he caught 2 but never the less it's still not right mate ?? Quote Link to post
stone rose 353
could someone tell me the difference between a pup at that age bein let of the lead running flat out round a field mine does twice a day and chasing a rabbit or do you have to keep all young animals on a lead till a certain age and wat age would be recomended just for future reference it might give me a idea were ive been goin wrong aii these years cheers 1 Quote Link to post

Is there any evidence anywhere that letting a running dog run does actually "f**k it's joints up"? I mean, has anyone ran a dog young and it's got arthritis at an early age? We hear it shouted about all the time but never actually hear a case of it. Kids are pushed into excersise from a very young age. My little girl is 6 and is running cross country and also does hurdles at school. Is she at risk from joint problems? I've done a quick search and can't find much. 2 Quote Link to post
Daniel cain 45,148
Running a dog before its fully grown poses a risk, running one in the middle of summer, well that speaks for itself, it's too hot the grounds too solid but at end of day it's up too the owner They have to run them now especially the bitches because they will be lined at their first season.you talk some shit-how come there's tons of coursing bred shit up for sale at 9 months of age?same as the wankers with the greyhounds, none of you slippery fuckers could lie straight in bed-people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones .they may well of been squatters so no harm done imo.do you slate folk who have their pups out ferretting from 3 m old?atb dc I am not accountable for tons of dogs only my own and experts such as yourself shouldnt spout unless you are knowledgeable. I know who,s talking shit, as for slippery fuckers you speaking about yourself ? why edit your original post?I must Of hit a nerve 2 rabbits man- get over it! and try and get out this season and do abit, instead of spending all your time on here trying to belittle tidy lads ,with sly comments like " it will be lined in its first season"like I said before "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones ".atb dc Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
The dog has got less chance of injuring itself chasing a silly green summer rabbit than it has running around with other dogs the same weight as it or heavier ........ 1 Quote Link to post
cantona 310
I've seen dogs entered to early mine included, yap ,yap , gutted, never again, why over match a pup that's going to do the job when mature physically and mentally? Not worth the risk in my eyes Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
With certain types,..it is a risk,..no doubts about that, but, in my opinion, it is frequently more of a mental issue than a physical one. Sometimes you win and unfortunately,. sometimes ya will lose... If you know your stock,...you know.... Edited August 2, 2016 by Phil Lloyd Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,132
Always throws up the same old arguments, Mine come ferreting as soon as poss and are out about the fields every day too. This pup here walked out at night from a fair young age but wasn't slipped. Saved a couple of fields which have sheep betting around, grass paddocks and squatting rabbits, she had her first couple at 6 months, only 4 or 5 runs then finish. only on the right nights and the right land. She's caught daytime over the summer, just on our Mooches and caught some bolters end of the season off the ferrets. Still a lot to learn but she's getting a few runs now on the green rabbits about, and is doing fine.... I felt she was ready for a little bit and now at 14 months, she'll jump gates/fences, straight back when the lamps off, walks to heel at night..... Still got to work on retrieve but it'll come. She has a lot of education already and I'm pleased with her so far, this year we can step it up a bit. I'm happy with her, and that's all that matters. 1 Quote Link to post

whitefeet4190 1,725
I'd like to see a 5 month old Lurcher catch a rabbit where I go lamping, but it will be interesting to see what the pup is doing in 2 years time, not having ago but just curious Atb with him anyway Quote Link to post
