Tidying Up My New To Me Prosport

Recommended Posts

I'd been hearing good things about these so, when I saw one on the used rack at my RFD, looking unloved and a little scruffy, I thought I'd give it a go

There's a few tiny dings and some minor rust patches on the barrel shroud. It's obviously done some work in it's life.

It shoots very sweet - it turns out that it has someones tuning kit inside - delrin tophat, guide and a few preload washers.

After a strip, clean, polish and regrease, it's shooting even better than before.

Given the coice, I would have picked a Walnut stock. I'm not a fan of that horrible dark stain and plasticky laquer ...... It had to go.

I followed Macs advice with the Nitromors and clingfilm. The laquer scraped off pretty easy after that.

Then I set to work with just 000 grade wire wool. This bit took a while. I didn't want it perfect but, I did want it a lot lighter.

These pictures are at the half way point .......

Once I was happy with it, I gave it a black wash, made from half Hammerite and half white spirit. I put this on very lightly with a sponge. It did exactly want I wanted it to - it soaked into some parts of the grain and gave a really nice light/dark contrast that shows off the grain and features of the beech.

When that was dry, I put on 2 coats of yacht varnish and, gave it a good buff.

Also, I cleaned up the metalwork with degreaser and gave it a good rub over with 3 in 1, this made the shroud look a lot better. But, I still put a non stick camo tape along the barrel to help protect it for now.

I put the leather sling on to complete the look

Cheers Si. This one's still a bit glossy but, it's more of a satin sheen now - it doesn't really show in the pictures.

As for comparing the 2 rifles - there's really nothing in it, they're both fantastic.

For me, I think a heavy springer with a quicker shot cycle helps my accuracy.

It didn't take me long to get used to loading pellets into either rifle. I do it without looking in the breech.

Same with the ABT on the TX - I've found that it's just become part of the motion now, I do it without thinking about it.

I did reach up for an ABT on the Prosport a few times when I first used it

For those times when I do fumble a pellet, the drop-through on the Prosport is good to have.

I like the solid underlever on my TX, It deels like it's built to last.

I have taken the piss out of the alloy lever on the Prosport in the past :whistling: but now that I've actually used one, it feels solid and secure.

I like to feel the inner workings of the rifle when I cock it - I get a little more feedback from the lever on the TX.

Both rifles are stunningly accurate and nice to look at. It's just me that needs more range time before I can do either of them justice.

Cheers Mac.

You're not kidding - I've done some stock work in the past but, this was my first beech one.

I was worried about putting too much Nitromors on at first so, on the first go, barely any lacquer came off.

On the second go, I put quite a bit more on and, the lacquer scraped off nice and easy.

I discovered that I needed to be gentle with the wire wool or, it can leave grey marks on some edges. Thankfully these came out quite easy.

I did a fair bit of testing with the black wash and varnish on other bits of wood before I put it on the stock.

The contrast between the black and golden brown is more defined than the pictures show.

I think the main thing I learened about working on beech was just have patience - know when to leave it for a while.

Although I didn't follow your guide from the other thread step-by-steb, it was a big help - Thank you

It looks 100 times better than that dark lacquer :)

The abt on mine needs fully bashing home every time , thought it might loosen up but it's still a pain when it won't push in and you've got to do it again!

I had a play with a ps in the shop a while back but you can't really tell what any things like till it's been tested in real life!

I might have a crack at taking the abt off cos I always keep hold of the cocking lever, it's just a natural thing to do so the abt is redundant any way!

Might have to get rob at the shop to lend me one, it'll have to be good cos I shoot my tx way more accurately than any pcp I have!

Think it's cos it's more involving and you don't have loads more shots at the flick of a switch

Cheers mate.

The missus said I was weird because I kept sitting there looking at it, thinking about what to with it before I cracked on.

Women eh
