I think what the original question was how much is a beccleugh springer meaning a springer from the place.like saying I've got a drakeshead Labrador or a deepfleet cocker. Hes not trying to say its any thing different.

 

 

When I enquired about a cocker a few years back they were no dearer that other dogs out of similar breeding (which compared to how the terrier lads operate is still toooooooo dear) & I say that as someone who buys / sells at that same price.

Know what you mean mate.it's not really at a working mans price is it. Spending 2-3 weeks wages on a pup ain't practical.stuffed if id spend it on a car!!

What is this mythical working mans price?. Everyone I know through trialling is a working man and they all pay good money for a dog

Yes and that's fine but would u agree not all but most dogs brought for trialing that aren't quite good enough for what ever reason are sold as fully trained dogs so your more likely to get your money back than someone like me that keeps a dog its whole life no matter how good it is?

Who said a buccleugh spaniel is a diffrent breed it's just a line of springer spaniel bred by one man don't people read befor tgey post

I live ten mins from Drumlanrig Castle and looking into buccleugh spaniels too. They are just a kennel, they actually specialise in labs from the oldest unbroken lines in the uk but they also run cockers and springers,

If you pay treble price for something let's say 1000 out of a top yard and had an % chance of getting a good dog it would be better than paying 300 for a scatter bred dog with a 10% chance of success and maybe go through 5 of them before you get what you want at the loss of a decade in training and enormous expence. Plus a fully trained buccleugh pup that was a failed trialer for small faults will still fetch a good price and could make a very good picking up/beating dog for someone and recover most of original cost.

To get back to the ''working man's'' price, and I'm talking lurchers, terriers, and the price of air rifles, as well as gundogs and shotguns, I find it quite laughable that people will pay more than £1000 for an air rifle, yet begrudge spending more than £150-£200 for a lurcher or terrier pup, and the same with gundogs. People will happily spend whatever it costs for a well made shotgun, and again begrudge spending say £400-£700 for a well bred gundog pup. Madness. If you want a pup that you think is a little expensive, save a little more for a little longer. All this "working man's" price is a bit silly

I always found this funny because a working man should be able to afford things vs a non-working man who has no income.

 

While I don't like the idea of high dollar PUPPIES as pups are crap shoots in my opinion I have no problem with paying 3-5000 for a 2 year old finished dog.
