I don't think you can say there worth two earth dogs . Because to get a proper earth dog got to be worth 2 Rock dogs . There both totally different styles of work . I've had a really good earth dog 6 seasons never seen rock piles took him up to Manchester found in rock easy or looked easy was a good day out and a nice change but I prefer earth work . But could you of put the rock dogs that was up there in the earth a dig them more than likely not . So don't think it's right comparing the two really .

Many dogs fail to find in rocks because they sometimes have to drop down head first in between a crack in rocks sometimes dropping four or five feet in darkness . I can see where you are coming from hrp but I think it's harder to get a dog to do rock work than earth work . A fox in a good place in the rocks is a different animal than one in a earth expecially little vixens who can squeeze into some very awkward spots where a dog can only get its head. Also a dog can't dig it's way on in rocks so the size of the dog needs to be correct

Got a cupple of spots like that with rebar in we take coller of dog as can get hung up, you get hear what's going on can be hard to dig big hammer is needed mate

I suppose it depends on the work that you have for your dog. If you do rock work and digging there's no reason your terrier can't excel at both if it's built for it.

Looks a good place that leethedog I have a spot like that were I get my young stuff started in one I do isn't a bad place... I can pritty much get them out if I needed to...bit of bar an hammer work...

looks a great place for a bolt, I'd find it hard not to let a terrier run that.

Rock dogs might have their uses and get some sport but Ive seen piss poor earth dogs be great in rocks and also the same cannon fodder were brave as they come in bales and drains. Drains, bales and rocks are unnatural for the game and so the dogs feel braver. Get them under the sod and you'll see how brave they are.

I agree to a point they are two different types of dogs the motto of a digging dog is stay till dug .now in the rock that may never come so at some point they have to come out, now if a earth dog did that it would be a jacker, horse for course

I wouldn't say rocks are an unnatural place for a fox to take cover, if anything it's the preferred place for a fox to take cover. But I understand what you mean, some dogs who won't push on will happily run through rocks because there's plenty of room for the dog.

If the fox does not bolt and the dog comes out after an hour/day/week, how can you be certain he has succeeded in dispatching his foe, whereas an earth dog, you know the score when you dig to him? I've never done rocks so don't know, but with earth work you get to see and contribute to the end result.
