Neal 1,873
I'm not sure if this is the correct section so feel free to move it if necessary. My family and I are going camping next weekend and were wondering what to do about the sleeping arrangements for the kelpies. We'll be borrowing some friends' large tent with a central communal area with separate pods. As we see it, the options are: a) Crates inside the central area which means they're contained but also means extra luggage. b ) Sleeping free in the central area which alleviates the extra luggage problem. c) Peg them out which stops them wandering (but so does a "down: stay!") but might make them grumble at other people using the campsite who wander past in the night. Any thoughts or experiences of similar? Edited July 24, 2016 by Neal
walshie 2,804
We did it a couple of years ago with a similar setup and will be doing it again soon at the fishing comp. We just had the dogs loose in the central area. They were quite happy there, but make it's pegged down securely as they both tried to crawl out under the sides until we put some extra pegs in. Neal 1,873
Thanks: that was my preferred option. My wife's a "posh bird" so we've only ever stayed in cottages before (which is completely different to cottaging!) as I can't imagine her in a tent unless it says John Lewis on the side! When we take the dogs to stay in cottages we usually let them sleep in a garden room/conservatory/boot room and only used a crate with Noggin once when he was about eighteen months and still chewing.

Gaz_1989 9,539
I think it depends on the dog and only you know the dogs. My brindle bitch and terrier are happy lying anywhere and when told to settle down are quite happy to just sleep. My red bitch is a head case and would need to be crated. She doesn't settle in the house so I would have no chance in a tent or caravan.

mushroom 13,203
I've had dogs sleep in the communal area of the tent, had them attatched to the hammock, sleeping freely underneath the hammock, left them outside refuges in the mountains attached and unattached. Only real issue was the terrier digging under the tent, escaping and going around the site pissing on everyone's tents

Neal 1,873
Thanks again for all the advice. Here's a final update: We didn't go away on that particular weekend as our friends were unable to book a space at the campsite in the New Forest that we'd intended to go to. However, we went ahead and bought our own tent and went to the Witterings on the south coast last weekend instead. Scout stayed at home with three duff feet (she kept the other one with her too of course!) and Noggin slept on a picnic rug in the communal area. He was perfectly behaved and didn't make a noise all night. The one odd thing was that all the time we were putting up the tent he grumbled at everybody who walked past (especially the German/East European bloke who kindly helped with the middle stages of putting up the tent as my lovely wife was as much use as mud-flaps on a tortoise) but was then happy and content for the remainder of our stay...until we took the tent down at which point he grumbled at every passerby again. Weird!
