Used Prosport Advice

Recommended Posts

I popped into my favourite RFD yesterday to buy some pellets ...... Wiltshire Shooting Centre in Devizes. I only wanted pellets but, on the used gun rack, they had a .177 Prosport.

I keep hearing good things about these so, I ended up coming home with it :)

I love my .22 TX HC. I've spent a lot of time getting it just how I want it - it's a proper keeper.

I'll move the Prosport on soon - I only bought it to try it.

I took it to Black Cat today to give it a whirl and, I was pleasantly surprised. It's a very nice rifle to shoot ......

It came with an AGS 3-9x40 scope with a duplex ret - it's actually quite a nice little scope and, it goes well with the rifle.

The Beech stock has a couple of tiny dings.

The barrel has some rust spots (no pitting) and blemishes but, the main body of the rifle seems to be clear.

The underlever works surprisingly well. To be honest, I think I was expecting some flexing but, it's solid and well made.

The rifle has more weight than I was expecting but, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

In comparison to my .22 TX, while it was still original - this Prosport has a quick firing cycle with a gentle thud and, not harsh recoil. It's accurate and a pleasure to shoot.

I put a load of shots through it then, put it over the Combro with FAPs:

S1. 801fps / 10.41ftlb

S2. 793fps / 10.21ftlb

S3. 795fps / 10.25ftlb

S4. 801fps / 10.41ftlb

S5. 801fps / 10.39ftlb

S6. 794fps / 10.23ftlb

S7. 795fps / 10.25ftlb

S8. 792fps / 10.17ftlb

S9. 782fps / 9.91ftlb

S10. 786fps / 10.02ftlb

There are a couple of things that you guys could help me with please ........

I plan to open it up to see what's in there and, give a general clean and regrease. I've read that problems can occur if the underlever is isn't reassembled properly - any thing to watch out for here?

What would be a good way to tidy up the barrel?

Send it off for a proper reblue? Patch it up? Go nuts and polish all of the metalwork back to silver?

Although the stock's ok and there's nothing majorly wrong with it, I'm not a fan of lacquered finish over Beech. Is it better to leave well alone? Strip and refinish?

And, lastly, what would be a fair resale value for this?

Thanks in advance for any help and tips :)

Yes. Nice. The f'kin cocking lever screw that connects the lever to the cocking shoe. Once it's been apart so many times, or for whatever reason, as soon as it looses any of its 'strength', the cocking lever itself won't stay shut as it uses the resistance on the last part of closing to stay closed. It's one of the issues that got me with my own PS, but fixed it with a few small shim washers.

Power wise, about bang on that. They are intentionally lower on power, which creates a much nicer shooting cycle to the masses.

The blacking will need sorting. PS's don't generally go for much, as in high 400's in mint condition, as there about that new anyway... but I guess you'll have to assess how much it will cost you to sort out the bits and what you want for it.

Nice that though man.

Those Prosport underlevers all feel solid, until the alloy snaps....

Cheers Mole.

I can imagine that being a weak point, especially with the cocking effort.

I used to be a coach builder - the amount of time I spent on that bloody Tig welder, fixing shit alloy parts was unreal.

I took it apart today for a clean and regrease - It's always interesting to look inside a second-hand rifle.

The parts were all in good nick - comp tube, piston, piston seal and spring.

I was surprised to find a delrin guide and tophat - is this normal on the PS?

I also discovered 4 delrin preload washers. I left those in for now. There was also a load of grease inside.

There was also a kind of thick plastic tape stuff around the forend of the comp tube. I guess this just acts as a bearing? The back end of the comp tube and the piston have have the usual black, split ring type bearing.

I gave the whole lot, and inside the main body of the rifle, a good degrease and polish.

I gave the blueing a good wipe and polish.

Then, lightly using molygrease on the spring and molypaste on the bearings, put it all back together.

It seems good from the few pellets that I put through it but, I'll give it a good run at the range this week.
