hjckcff 1,738
when i was younger we used to use a powder called cycatrin. it was a powder form and we sprinkled it on the wounds thinking it would help the healing , it was a few years on that we nearly lost a dog that had become immune to it. and could'nt fight infection on its own. we live and learn 1 Quote Link to post
jiggy 3,209
Bit off topic talking about dogs that are being treated after been worked every 2 weeks for 8 seasons and a giving antibiotics to a bitch thats pupping maybe twice in her lifetime. The question was more to do with effecting the pups through the milk from a bitch that received penicillan than to do with over useage over a career. Quote Link to post

Corkman 944
Anyway back to whelping...how does everyone deal with mastitis? Does anyone give a bitch penicillin anyway before she even shows signs? Does anyone not use penicillin and prefer natural methods? Its a horrible thing to see and the suffering it brings. Never had mastitis when I was caring for a bitch. Daily handing of your bitch, pups and indeed all dogs in your care usually identifies any things that are not quite right.... Simple. But cefilexin works if not caught in time and pups can feed away. If all pups are lost at birth due to reason or other then remember bitches cannot milk themselves!! and vets tend not to give out drying out tablets anymore? so then for me it's time to get hands on and feel for any problems. Manually drawing off problem areas. 2 minute job. Same for drying them off gradually after a litter. Usually a pup I hold back helps with this. It's easy to miss subtle infection and can throw a bitch off for weeks fighting this infection. if only few pups left in a litter they avoid the dodgy teats too. Not nice getting a gob full of puss. And I always breed so that pups arrive in spring, summer months... Bitches would be working in the winter months..... Just my way of doing things. Edited July 26, 2016 by Corkman 2 Quote Link to post
jiggy 3,209
You asked the question mate and I answered . i understand that end of it put can penicillan harm pups through suckling a medicated bitch thats the question im asking. Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
That's for a vet to answer and prescribe in the first place .99% of dog lads don't have a clue what or why they are administering drugs .Seems to be a culture of `i can get it so best use it`. 2 Quote Link to post
jiggy 3,209
Surely someone on here has been in the situation where a sick bitch has been dosed by a vet and asked will it affect the pups does anybody know the answer. Quote Link to post

Do not give baytril or tetracycline; your vet may prescribe amoxicillin (or another penicillin variety) as a last resort. (Do not administer without a vet's advice.) But if your bitch's problem is Mastitis you can safely give her reduced amounts of cephalexin (250mg daily for a terrier)... 2 Quote Link to post

tinytiger 831
Whats peoples opinions on a penicillan injection a couple of hours after bitch has pupped, a greyhound man i know lost a bitch or 2 over the years to womb infections and he claimed it can be too late at times to give antibiotics because it was hard to spot infection. Get the penicillan in early was his attitude and it would also clear up other underlying conditions that might weaken the bitch. People would differ on opinions on this matter im sure for treating an infection that might not exist but he reckoned it had no affect on pups or bitch and prevention is better than cure, i would be interested to hear other peoples views on this. Id imagine it would be difficult for a beginner to spot infection and to know whether a bitch is in danger when passing blod spots or gunk 3 weeks after pupping when this is quite common.a lot of people would have them on antibiotics before and during the mating-simulox i think they are called(big pink tablrts) Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
To add to this and something I'd forgot until recently ,the bitch will bleed sporadically after whelping which to some may appear concerning but is the bodies natural cleansing . It may appear as drops or in urine and should not smell .This usually stops by 4 weeks or soon after . Quote Link to post
C.green 3,231
D.C. breeding decent pups doesn't happen by chance and my statement said "decent",you said quality, but thats a fair assessment I will stand by, I really don't care whether you think I'm a plum or not as I have read some pretty daft sh*t that you have posted, its easy to breed from scatter bred terriers like yours that are already doing the job but try finding "decent" working Plummers of the correct size and type, I have bred something that simply wasn't out there, The Plummer terrier as a breed was never finished or completed before its namesake died and the clubs have no idea, they are only interested in showing and not work, I could go out and buy a black or chocolate digging Patt, fell any day of the week, blend a few lines and call them my own but that is not true when it comes to Plummers, my name will never be remembered when Plummers are talked of and yours certainly won't about the stuff you breed but mention Nuttall,Parkes or stevens and an image of their terrier types will instantly spring to mind, these are the men we have to thank for most of our "quality" working stock, WM Did you breed the 2 plummers for sale on dragon driving ?
