sussex 5,777
David Davis has been talking about making trade deals with individual EU countries... I don't think he really understands how this works? EU countries aren't allowed to make their own bilateral trade deals.....But when have the other countries In the EU played by the rules if it didn't suit them ...? .. So you think the rest of the EU will just ignore the rules when it comes to setting up trade deals with us? Ok then, admire your optimism No not ignore , just bend them slightly ...I certainly can't see the Germans causing major problems for there motor / engineering industries just to play hardball ..I think their will be lots of behind the scenes talks regardless of what Junkers had said ... EU members aren't allowed to do deals themselves but they will surely be having unofficial bilateral talks to negotiate a proposed deal that will then go before the EU government. They can't subvert the democratic will of other EU states but they will certainly be doing what they need to to secure their own interests. And I also don't believe for a minute the same won't be happening between UK and non EU states in prep for prompt deals post completion of Brexit. How prompt do you expect these deals to be considering trade deals can take decades to be completed? That's only when the EU are negotiating because they have to get every deal agreed by 28(soon to be 27) countries which is an almost impossible job ..be hard enough to get them all to agree which way is up let alone a complex trade deal ..when it's just us looking after just us how hard can it be ..? How prompt do you expect these deals to be considering trade deals can take decades to be completed? The Canada deal took 5 years. Did the North American FTA take about 3 years from negotiation to ratification? Two years seems a significant amount of time, especially with such an important/volatile economic and political event. When you have less voices with separate motivations in these things they ain't gonna be as difficult to figure out. Isn't that the point to this? India has wanted a deal with the EU for seven years is it? Something the UK has wanted and would have sorted much sooner given less opposition from other members.
