slipper 116
Can a 223 fire a 35 grain vmax? Just wondering Quote Link to post
Underdog 2,337
Of course it can bud. Quote Link to post
Tremo 138
Yes. With a 35 grain pill you should be able to get up around the 3800 fps mark, if that is what you are after. I've never used any lighter than a 40 grain in my .223 though. Quote Link to post
slipper 116
Thanks I've never really thought of using the 35 always used the 40 but wanted to use something faster if it groups ok Quote Link to post
Underdog 2,337
4000+ should be achievable with the right powders. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Eh chris if you want fast you ought to have a look at a .22-250 mate 1 Quote Link to post
andyf 144
Tried some 35gr when I had a .223, shot like a 'scattergun' but Chrono'd @ 3800fps. Fast but **kin usless. Quote Link to post
slipper 116
No need dan hit them hard enough with the 223 dead is dead just wanted to try something a bit faster for long distance crows so a 22 250 would be to expensive for twatting crows all day Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
Fair enough mate. Try them 35g in your rifle mate. I tried a .17 Hornet the other day what a calibre lol Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
No need dan hit them hard enough with the 223 dead is dead just wanted to try something a bit faster for long distance crows so a 22 250 would be to expensive for twatting crows all day £3 per box difference. That's 15p per shot, and even then it depends on the brand as Federal are cheaper in .22-250 than .223! Personally, I would think if you can afford to use a .223 on crows, you can afford to use .22-250. If you want to hit crows, personally I'd see if your rifle likes Privi as then you can knock £10 a box off the price of either and a bird isn't going to care if it's a soft point or a nosler. The real question is whether you want the expense of changing the gun as that's the real cost. Other alternative on either calibre is to reload. My real reservation would be whether or not you're going to start wearing the barrel with 35gr because you're into the 4,000fps area and crow shooting can be repetitive. walshie 2,804
It does make me laugh when someone asks a question on this site. Q: Anyone got a good recipe for 35gr in a 223? A: You don't want a 223, you want a 22-250/338 lap mag/blunderbuss.. He's got a 223 and he wants to use 35gr ammo in it. Quote Link to post

He thought about the .338 but found it not enough gun for them scary Welsh hills....so opted for the .458 Winchester in the end Ought to just take out a Welsh fox humanely Just. Quote Link to post

Generally slower, like 1 in 12 etc is better for lighter long bullets. Quote Link to post
