.17 Hornet Strikes Again

Recommended Posts

About the same as 223 factory ammo, I have a variation ready to send off for a 22 hornet but now I'm not sure

The thing that is bugging me is I can't see a lot of difference between the 223 and the 17 hornet apart from knock down power with a heavier bullet

I am the same I want something between my 223 and 22lr

22 or 17 hornet I just don't know now help lol

I've not had much experience with .22Hornet, I went for the .17Hornet for the extra range to the .22Hornet it's very similar to the .223, If I had .223 i'd probably go for the .22Hornet.... only difference I noticed from .223 to .17Hornet is the noise, the .17Hornet with decent mod is just as quiet as my HMR very impressed with it.

I'm sure someone with experience with them both could advise better, just my opinion :D

I hate to derail tornado's thread about a decent night out, but what is this talk of "pushing for a 17 with no takers"?

Unless you've got a massive stock of 17 hornets you want to palm off on someone, why would you care what anyone else shoots?

It's nothing but personal preference, and without wishing to give the man a big head, Underdog has proved time and again that if you know what you are doing, a paperclip and rubber band can be just as deadly as the "in vogue" calibres.

I fail to see the nostalgia value in a gun that does everything you ask of it.

I pushed it as a calibre people might want to try instead of HMR / or .22 Hornet against a background of a whole lot of prejudice against .17 calibres caused by the HMR issues, and the whole having to reload issue with .22 Hornet if Hornady isn't available locally in .22 Hornet. Note the words "might want to try".

Why the interest? Because a lot of people write off new calibres without giving them a fair hearing because of prejudices caused by other failed calibres such as HMR.

Ultimately beyond encouraging a few people to give it a go, I don't care what other people shoot. At the end of the day, you shoot what suits you best. :bye:

You're missing the point mate. "giving it a go" involves a lot of hassle and expense - variations, buying the gun, and if not suitable, selling it for less than you paid for it, putting in a new variation, waiting another age for it to come through etc etc.

As Tornado pointed out above, a 17 hornet has a pretty similar trajectory to a 223 (which I already have) so 2 guns that do the same it pretty pointless. As a 17 owner even he said if he had a 223 instead of a 243, he'd probably have gone for the 22 hornet.

I'm certainly not put off by 17 prejudice. There's a lot of guns i haven't owned and probably never will own.

Personal preference + what you want if for + doing its job = perfect gun.

What on earth are you talking about, "whole lot of prejudice against .17 calibres caused by the HMR issues" and what is this BS........ "because of prejudices caused by other failed calibres such as HMR".

I am also looking for a hornet after months of reviews and talking to people that have 17 and 22 hornets and from what feedback I got made my variation favor the 17.....in recent months I have shot a lot of fox with my 243 that I got for fox and stalking to use a sniper cam at night, now after acquiring the 6.5x55 for stalking and most of my fox being shot between 60 and 200 yards and reading all about the 17 hornet it sounds like the rifle to fill the gap.....happy hunting
