And there are plenty who will strongly disagree about your comments especially regards air rifle users being more efficient at protecting crops decoying than shotgun users. If you've ever used a shotgun with decoys you would realise that. A decent bag with an air rifle would be a fraction of an average bag with a shotgun. But of course you haven't got the experience to know that 1 Link to post

But of course you haven't got the experience to know that Mark has shot guns bud i think any way and as for shot guns and bigger bags iv taken out 380 + crows in three afternoons with air rifles the thing with shot guns is the bang it makes them all feck off where a silenced rifle only a few feck off so i can see where mark is coming from and decoying them in works well to so i can also see where your coming from to atvbmac  1 Link to post

Even rook squabbing 380 is good, but it is not quite the same as pigeon decoying which is what Mark is actually talking about. Think of the realities. High crops at this time of year means that the birds have to be shot in the air. I could have two or three dead in the air at once. You can't do that with an air rifle. They have to be left to settle. The noise isn't always an issue and can help in certain circumstances by causing birds that have settled nearby to lift and look around. Again, you don't get that with an air rifle. You have to be dead on the point the birds are landing on and you will know that this isn't always easy. Don't get me wrong. I've used air rifles to decoy pigeons to good effect. Mainly over clover or stubble during the period when the game birds were settling in to their pens and feeding areas so noise had to be avoided. Also intercepting them at drinking points in hot weather would yield some good bags as would taking them off the pheasant feeders in winter. But I cannot think that any farmer would go along with the idea that someone with an air rifle would do better than a shotgun user. The bags I got would be on average ten times bigger using a shotgun. Having a shotgun isn't the same as having used one 1 Link to post
tomburras 2,730
I often find the bang of a shotgun gets them out of the trees and gets them moving again. Even firing a shot sometimes to get them on the move after a quiet spell. 1 Link to post
mark williams 7,563
Ah well, - I have and use shotguns regularly. I don`t post on them as I find the fine art of air gun hunting much more satisfying and "testing". Shooting pigeons on growing crops is one of the deadliest methods of control but you haven`t a bloody clue have you? We see pigeons going into growing crops and laying large flattened areas where they land forever and a day ( no doubt you`ll disagree). We look hard and long for these areas where the tracks from the tractor sprayers intercept the flattened crops/ feeding areas. Simply lay some dead pigeons, on cradles, in the flattened crop/ feeding area and lay in wait( prone usually) in the tyre track with some flattened crop over your back as concealment. I would never attempt this method with the likes of a TX springer but the likes of a HW 100 off a bipod is the absolute business, "they rock". I jest you not fella when I say an air rifle can trump a shotgun ( dependant on circumstance) and there must be many a lad on here that would agree. I mean you no disrespect but I am bored shitless with your " get Mark Williams" regime as are others. Stop talking and start walking the walk ! - Post some photos of your exploits, - we don`t bite ( normally) Telling lads on here how to suck eggs doesn`t work. Now " run along" and leave us all alone.
