A Good Time To Gain Permission, Just Ask, The Right Way.

Recommended Posts

Sorry but anyone who thinks an air rifle is a better pigeon shooting tool than a shotgun, should perhaps take a look at some of the bags the professional pigeon shooters achieve down Hampshire way, 500 bird days not being out of the ordinary, that I would suggest is almost impossible with an air rifle, and nowhere near as skillful :whistling:

For the lads short of a permission, or maybe new and struggling, harvest times are a really good time to gain a permission. Crops this time of year are usually under pressure from Wood

NOW NOW BOYS LETS JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT OR THIS THREAD WILL GET LOCKED BY ONE OF THE MODS   YOU BOTH HAVE SOME GOOD POINTS   BUT LETS CALL IT A DAY ON THE BICKERING   ATVBMAC

Good advice Mark, I would just like to add a small caveat, a lot of farmers, especially round my way, still regard air rifles as toys (possibly due to their own "toys" they played about with as lads)

I`m not saying an air rifle is a better pigeon shooting tool than a shotgun Charlie, not at all, I do shoot both you know.

What I am saying,- right or wrong,- is that an air rifle trumps a shotgun in many a different circumstance - that`s all.

In a circumstance like this, at the side of a busy dual carriageway, the air rifle trumps a shotgun because you are way out of line shooting a shotgun by the side of a busy dual carriageway.

These are just two circumstances both ways, I hope it comes across the right way.

Totally agree and so would most cereal farmers. Let's not forget that the point of this thread is to suggest that you can convince a farmer that you can shoot more pigeons with an air rifle than the shotgun users. There is a lot of back pedalling recently, but the first post suggests that you can 'usually' gain permission by telling farmers that you can shoot more pigeons with your air gun.

It is a shame that Mark did not read (or possibly preferred not to acknowledge) the points I made about his suggestion on how to decoy on laid wheat using an air rifle. I'm sure that those who know a little more about the subject could also see the obvious flaws in his plan. If you really are going to try and gain permission to use your air rifle on a cereal farm than I would suggest that you forget about decoying as the shotgun guys will stuff you 10 to 1 at least, and instead ask if there are any problems with rats and feral pigeons around the buildings and stores. Ask if he has any corvid problems that you could deal with, or possibly rabbits in hedgerows or on stubble when the cover is down in a few months time. If you are lucky enough to get permission then you are not over promising anything and it may well lead to a few hours here and there on growing crops in winter and spring.

Now cant we just agree to disagree .

That might be best

Personally, I reckon if you two met up for a days shooting and a couple of pints, things would be different - you both seem to be decent blokes and, you share a common interest.

These forums are good but, it can be all too easy for a difference of opinion to deteriorate wher as, it properly wouldn't during a proper conversation.
