Arthritis In Young Dog

Recommended Posts

Anyone had any experience with arthritis in young dogs?

My dog fractured his hock about 15 months ago when he was 18 months old.

The vet said he would suffer from arthritis. After he runs he is lame. I know he will never be 100per cent but was wondering if any one else has gone through this and what I can expect

Cheers

my dog hurt his rear leg at 7 months and even though his fine now at 2 1/2 ish and can belt around no worries with out it showing. Very randomly once in a blue moon he might be laying down then get up and carry it just for a second or two. Also lamping last winter maybe 2 or 3 times in total he would carry it after a run then just walk it off and be fine for the rest of the night with no after affects. So in later life i would expect it to show up more

my lad had a deerhound/collie/greyhound about 10 yrs ago that had a similar injury, he was never quite right for a year or two but on occasions he looked a world beater but you just had to limit your time out with him, when he got to around 6 or 7 we found him a pet home as that winter was a very cold snowy one and his back leg that he had injured would go stiff especially standing around ferreting, WM

Thanks for the replies fellas

He is a half cross bull greyhound,a big powerful dog. I keep him in good shape but with plenty of rest. It's a real shame because he has some very good blood in him not that that means much but he is well bred by my father in law who has kept the line for 20 odd years . He has a home for life what ever . He guards my missus and son like a personal protection dog,it's the strangest thing lol

He still does a little work so he's happy

I have similar here with my larger bitch Rue, she broke her hock at 10 months old, it's only recently that I have been able to piece together what happened after a visit to the bone man at 5 years old. I kept resting her up as soon as she went lame again and again, get her fit take her out a couple of times and the same thing would happen again... I now keep her a lot lighter than ever before, massage her with green rub 2-3 times a week but more importantly I think, on my vets recommendation I keep on working her as it would be cruel to not to, with lots more steady walks and plenty of hunting the bracken she seems to be holding up a lot better at the minute. I have started to give cod liver oil 3-4 times a week as I had ran out of mackerel and some joint supplements too and I'm hoping that this will keep her well for the rest of her time.

Hope yours comes round

Have a look at joint supplements such as glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and Rosehip.

There are others too and some joint supplements are available that contain all of the above.

They are pretty safe as far as I'm aware and I take them daily myself as well as giving them to both of my lurchers.

I'm not saying they are a miracle cure but they have been known to ease arthritis.
