The Tidal

Recommended Posts

Took SeanC and Jamie onto the tidal Exe last week, Sean cut his teeth on the rivers years ago and has since reverted to the dark side (carping!!) Jamie is a good all round angler but had never fished a river before, he's an angling coach and does a lot of work with kids on the Emperor lakes complex in Kingsbridge.... I also took Fin along as he's a master of the Tidal (well at least that's what he'll tell you! lol).

I've put up here a few times about the fishing on this place, it's different to most freshwater places as you can be catching roach and dace one minute then be dragged around by a mullet or even a bass the next, it's a mad place where I've hooked salmon, caught sea trout plus loads of mullet, bass and few flounder as well as chub to 5lb, dace and roach, big bream and even carp.

It was an early meet (well it was for me and Fin, Sean blamed Jamie for being late I reckon it was an excuse for me to get the coffees in !!l lol).

Once we got there we trekked across the first field on the upper part and settled in a couple of swims below the shallows where there is deepish water on the inside (stick float line) and steady water down the middle for the feeder.

I got Fin settled on a maggot feeder and he was quickly catching dace and small chub,

I set up the stick float and got in the water and steadily started putting a few fish together, Jamie was trying to get to grips with a centre pin, I offered a closed face but he persevered and caught a few fish on the stick, Sean done a bit of photography then nicked my rod and proceeded in catching a few.

I told the boys we had a few hours before the tide started to back up and make fishing the stick impossible, this is when I sit on the feeder and wait for a mullet or bream, there were mullet everywhere but that don't mean you'll catch them. Once the tide backed up a bit I put in 8 balls of groundbait and started to fish over the top, the dace were first onto it and the bites were hard to hit, then I had a proper bite and missed it.

Sean had given up on the stick and promptly nicked my feeder rod, and the fun began.

Around went the tip and the first mullet was on, and safely in the net after a decent little scrap.

I went down to Jamies swim and told him to switch onto the mullet now, he had a few bites and lost a better fish but Fin and Sean had it sussed, between them they ended up with 5 mullet. It was a frantic 1.5 hours then it stopped, this is how it is with the mullet I find, you got to make the most of it when they have their heads down.

Fin had a decent looking pike take a dace on the retrieve and it hung on for a few minutes, got it nearly at the net before it was gone.

I managed to wrestle my stick rod off Sean for an hour or so at the end and now the tide was dropping again this line started to fish well, nothing too big but nice fishing for Dace, chub and roach plus half a dozen brownies. I did hook a mullet on the stick but it was a fleeting affair as the hook pulled on the first run, we'd hooked 8 and caught 5 between us and that aint bad for mullet.

They were all thin lips which are a bit smaller than the thick lips and don't scrap quite as hard IMO,but still a great days fishing...

He's not daft, I'm going to have to get a camera or I could be whipper in, blow the horn every time a rabbit bolts.

I though you were chief run netter, said you liked to get right in amongst it!!

I'm not sure on other rivers tidal parts Clive, I've fished the tidal Tone a few times but that's all coarse fish from what I saw.

Certainly local this is different to anything else...

My cousins net the river at Topsham for the salmon this is between this stretch and the estuary proper, the catch lots of bass, mullet etc and some gilt head bream, also huge carp and bream!!
