Rez 4,961
I've been asked to take care of a proper squirrel problem. I'm thinking feeders are the way to go. What's the general beef with these then? Wooden sides and bottom, steel sheet top, re fill every day, once a week? I do think this topic has come up before so I apologize. Nice one. just-A-snap 1,269
Be willing to give it time when all set up for the word to get around that there is a new Bistro in town. Maybe also having to try out a few different locations Rez. Good luck. Quote Link to post
Nicepix 5,650
It might be slow starting at this time of year. The squirrels may be up in the branches harvesting whatever is coming into season for the next month or two. The best time is when there is little natural food available and they are living off their larders from September onwards. You haven't said what you intend feeding with. That would dictate what type of feeder you use. For grain such as wheat just adapt a suitably sized plastic container. As long as it is free flowing in wet weather the squirrels shouldn't damage it. The refill time depends on how big the container is and how long they take to empty it which is a ball of string question. But if they are emptying it quickly you'll need to keep it topped up regularly or put larger containers or more of them out or you'll lose the attraction. If you put up feeders it initially pays to smear peanut butter or Nutella around the trap site, base of the tree, up the trunk, along the branch, etc. to give a scent trail. Once a few have found it the others will follow. They also need to be within 30 yds or less of a comfortable place for you to wait. You don't need full camo' or a big hide, just a tree to sit still against and something low in front to break up your outline. 2 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
I agree with Nicepix mate, at this time of year I dont think think they will be too effective, although there is no harm installing them, as we all know Autumn and winter creep up rather quickly, but during the cold months, I would think you will have a birthday mate. khutula 10
I just built a couple of shelves and attached them to the trees. Throw up a couple of money nuts and out down a bit of peanut butter and they come for a feed. 1 Quote Link to post

khutula 10
They can resist the monkey nuts and peanut butter. I just lean out of the window and pop them off. I also have one at ground level where I can just at my patio table and take them out. Quote Link to post
